Where's the engine ground strap?
Possible engine drop coming up, so I've been going thru my Haynes manual to read up on the "correct" way to do it & chasing down on the hoses, electrical wires, etc. But can't find the ground strap from the engine case to the body. Isn't it supposed to be on the bottom of the case? Also, isn't there one from the tranny to the body?

In my '86 Targa, the ground strap is on the end of the transmission near the shift coupler.

So there's only the one from the tranny. Nothing on the engine?

Correct, only one ground strap from trans to body. See included picture. There is also a ground strap from the alternator to one of the studs on top of the case. You can only get to that one when you remove the air cover. Lou

There is a bunch of ground wires connected at the elbow of the blower tube, on the left side of the engine as you stare at it.

Add another if the lack of one is bothersome. Can't hurt. Can help the electrons find an alternate/easier path back to the battery.

Is it easy to replace the ground strap without having to drop the tranny?
My oil temp gauge has been bouncy, despite having been inspected and tested by VDO last year who confirmed it was in good working order. I have read elsewhere that the bouncyness could be due to a bad tranny ground. I have looked at mine and it looks kind of beat up. Anyone else have this problem and replaced their ground strap? |

Its no problem at all, earth stud on the body and gearbox casing are both easy to get to, gearbox one slightly more difficult. Most fiddly part is feeding the new earth cable over the top of the transmission mount but even that is hardly nothing.

Yes, easy:
1. clean up any corrosion and make everything shiny with fine emery paper - that's the mount and the strap or get new strap 2. use dielectric grease (very thin thin thin layer) 3. use new washer/nut or clean them up a bit too Bes ure to do the body and the tranny sides of the strap & mounting surfaces
