Speaker-grille delete on dashboard
I have recently seen an upholstery shop with the following in mind: headliner replacement, windshield replacement, and dashboard recovering.
My dashboard is cracked in couple of places: classic by the gauges, and from the speaker grill to the windshield. The vinyl is as well cracking up (spider webbing) in many places. Finally, the speaker grill is cracked as well in the middle. The owner is used to working on Porsches, and is well regarded. The only hiccup I have is that he is telling me that he will have to fill the speaker grill, and cover it up, effectively deleting the speaker grill. Price is fair (I think) and in the tune of $700 for the removal, repair, recovering, reinstall...with a few finition touches. Were 69s shipped with AND without speaker grills? Is it really a big deal? (I am NOT considering selling this car ANYTIME soon) Thanks for your opinion.

For $900 you can get a new dash and speaker cover and keep it original if you want. Expensive maybe but i like to keep things original. And one day you may not be able to get a new dash at all, the dreaded NLA(no longer available). But it is not a big deal and it is your car and money so do what you want. Good luck.

Send it to Just Dashes to have it rebuilt. If your grill is good, you can use it. If it's bad, you'll have to find a used replacement. They may redo the grills or have some used to sell, but I don't know about that. Cost is around $450 to $500, and it can take quite a while to get it back. Mine too 6 months. They said they had to wait until they got a few of them in to make a run out of it. It's like new and guaranteed as long as you own the car. On mine, I just had them fill in the speaker hole, since I'd never use it anyway.

If you are in Palo Alto it sure would be easier to
send it down to Tony Garcia of Autobahn Interiors. He is in San Diego. Tony knows Porsche interiors very well & quoted me $350 to restore the dash on my 70E in german vinyl, including the speaker grill. While I was not quoted a timeframe, I seriously doubt it would be 6 months, as with "Just Dashes" http://www.autobahninteriors.com/pages/3/index.htm Do a search on the earlyS board & you will find he is very well respected for upholstrey on early 911s. Good luck ![]()

that dash grill would be nice for a center channel audio install.
