Rear Speaker Deck
I have a 82 911SC and I am trying to remove the cover that goes up the back behind the rear seats and bends over to cover the speaker deck. I am the process of reupholstering.
I have removed the 4 screws holding the "verticle" part and it is still held at the back by the rear window. Any suggestions as to how to do this. |

Two items to consider.
1) If it has speakers in it (they were optional) there will be an approx. 1.25x1.25 inch piece of foam rubber under the rear edge of the deck (put there to give additional height, to allow room for the speakers) which may have "bonded" itself to the metal shelf. Removal may necessitate it's destruction. 2) To remove the deck (after you have removed the screws referred to) you must slide the front section up; there is a metal "tang" bonded to rear of that vertical section of the deck that (when installed) is slide down into a sort of flat metal loop which aids in holding it in place. Good luck, Jerry M '78 SC |

Gently prying it with a credit card around the edges worked for my '89

What will you be using to reupholster the rear deck?

Man, I'm glad you asked that. Tried removing the rear shelf on my 84 and quit when I was sure I had missed something or was about to break something...
My "covering" is good, but the top horizontal section is warped...a hugh upward bow in the center. Has anyone had good luck using the original leather but replacing the fiberboard(?)

I am waiting for some samples of carpet & upholstery. If they look good I am going to order kits for all of the carpet and upholstery except the headliner. I am going to do the install myself and will try to post before and after pictures.

My horizontal section is vinyl and unless yours has been re-upholstered it is probably vinyl too. I would think that if you can get it loose without streaching it too much you can replace the fiberboard. You might want to warm the vinyl just before you glue it to the new board to make it easier to "lay" down.

I have a 82 sc black interior with speakers on the rear deck. I can see the foam from the back window. What is supposed to cover the foam. Is there an additional vinyl piece to cover up the foam from the additional height it gives.
I wonder if maybe my vehicle didnt have the option and a PO had stuck a foam piece to mount the speakers and just left it that way and you can see the foam. Could someone post a picture of what there SC looks like with the optional rear deck speakers. Kevin

Mine has a piece of foam approx. 1.5" sq. x may be 30" long across the back edge of the deck holding the speakers. This adds height to the deck for speaker clearance. There is a thin piece of "speaker" foam glued to the bottom of the deck, 3/16" thick approx.. I thought my deck was fiberboard but it is thin formed plastic that is one piece that wraps around to be the part behind the seats. If this is warped the only thing I can think of is to use a piece of wood screwed to the plastic (underside) as a stiffner. The wood would have to be thinner than the 1.5" sq. foam.

My foam is exactly like that. But what keeps the foam from being seen from the back window? My foam is natural color foam sand colored. Not exactly nice to see with a black interior.

Here's a picture of the back of it. There is a tab that needs to be slid out to remove it.

Your deck is a seperate piece from the seat back piece, mine is all one molded piece. If you look at the deck in your car you will notice the deck slopes down from the rear window. This slope allows the top of the deck piece to be just below the rear window.
I think the foam is glued to the top of the car deck which holds it in place. Your upholstered piece cannot be bowed up in the middle. Mine is a 82 SC and it looks different from yours but I believe what I am saying will work. I think it just needs a stiffner. |
