930 starting problem - HELP!
 

I have a 1987 and every once in a while it will not start. All I get is a click at the starter. The starter has been replaced and I don't know where else to look for the problem. Does anyone have a suggestion? I hate to take it to the dealer (good grief) to have it fixed if there is a typical problem that others have faced with the car. Thanks for your help.

Are you sure that your battery is good? That's the first thing that I would check on, especially if you don't drive the car very frequently.

I'll check it for sure but I don't think that is it. It only happens once in a while and then for no apparent reason, the car works again. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your reply I appreciate it.

Is the solenoid also new?

Since this problem is sporadic, I would suggest that you check the engine ground strap to ensure that it is both intact and that the contact surfaces are clean. You'll find the ground strap on the passenger side of the transmission, just as the transmission enters the passenger compartment. There are several other grounding points throughout the car that you might want to check if the engine ground strap is ok.

Are you sure it "clicks"? Very common for the ignition switch to wear out in these old cars.

Yes it clicks, and the solenoid is part of the starter isn't it? If so (I think it is) then it is new too. I will check the ground strap on the transmission...thanks dyerkes for the advice...do you know of other potential places for grounding that I might check as well?

I believe that is the main one for the engine. Other grounding points are in your trunk along side the fuse box, and also in your engine bay - by the CD box and also by your rear wiper if you have one.
