Spark Plug Replacement
Any tips for a newbie changing his spark plugs for the first time? ie) special tools/techniques
I've done this many times on my Honda Civic but the tight quarters and angle on the P-car is really freaking me out.:eek: ___________ Thanks T-RONE 87 911 COUPE |
The special spark plug tool that comes in the factory tool kit is invaluable. My '88 3.2 has no A/C and I can change all 6 plugs in about 10 minutes with this tool.

I also like the factory spark plug tool and I put a thin coat of anti-seize on the spark plug threads. Make sure you start the plugs with the tool and your hand, you can "feel" if the plug is threading straight. Then tighten and your set.

The factory sparkplug tool is the best. If you do not have one then a good sparkplug socket wrapped in some duct tape so it does not disengage inside the head works well also.
I use a 10mm allen socket on a 3/8" ratchet instead of the factory 10mm allen wrench from the tool kit. Anti sieze is a must, (for the next time you remove the plugs. Very important....DO NOT OVER TORQUE the new plugs. Spin them in hand tight then just snug a little, Don't forget to tighten the little nipples on the top of the plugs if they are there. In general it's a very easy job as long as you can squeeze your hand past any obstructions. Good Luck |

The 'Klein 21' spark plug wrench and 10 mm Allen wrench that used to be included in the early factory tool kits is the best method ever devised for changing spark plugs on a 911 engine, and they are occasionally available on eBay as 'Mystery Porsche tool/wrench' .... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1084532611.jpg |
