HELP : brake pad wear indicator light

85 Carrera.

this came on for the first time today.

Brakes feel OK.

Am I to expect imminent metal on metal contact, or will
I still get some milage out of the pads before I can arrange for new pads to be put in?

I presume all 4 pads need to be examined ASAP, but in the interim is the car OK to drive for a while without hearing a scraping sound?

Please advise,

RG5

The light comes on when the pad with the sensor(one at each wheel wears down to about 1/8". As pads can sometimes wear unevenly you could be closer to the rotors than that. You should expect to hear scraping within perhaps 2-500 mi. depending on use. It will also require the "tripped" sensor to be replaced to turn off the light. If you wait till the last minute you will need to replace more than one sensor.(I think they are about $25 each) plus the worn pads.

The Carrera light will come on when there is a short to ground anywhere in the warning light circuit.

The design intent is for the embeded pad sensor to be the source of that ground when the pad is worn to near the end of it's service.

Check for worn pads, if the pads are ok the wire may have chafed to ground.

The sensor strip is part of the pad, only the external wire connecting to the chassis circuit is separate.
