Cayman S Unveiling at Newport Auto, CA
For those that got a chance to go, it was well worth a look at the Cayman S unveiling. However, the sticker on this particular car was up there (72K). I really like this car and it felt quite roomy inside. Porsche managed to find some room when compared with the Boxster. Here are a few pictures so you can see what I have seen.

While many like the styling of the Cayman, I still feel it's just a Boxter in Coupe's clothing.
At 72K it's not appealing to some especially when it's only going to be worth only 50K next year when they fix all the issues associated to the new model. The Carrera now over 85K+ and Carrera S 90K+ out the door, and now a gussied up Boxter for 72K+...Don't think so....Porsche AG is dreaming in La La Land (No Diss on Los Angeles intended) Porsche AG is going to price itself out of the market very very soon (mark my words) Look at the Cayenne and Boxter S, prices dropping like flies. I've gotta believe that Porsche AG is listening to USA dealers that are overly confident that buyers will swallow the marketing hype. I've been to Porsche Dealers looking to upgrade and have NEVER seen the showroom with any buyers present. Tell you something? Once Porsche get's into the range of Ferrari and other exotic's (and they are) and continues to move away from the main stream of (reasonable) buyers, it'll dawn on them that their cars are not worth the price. I'll keep my Carrera until it is no longer feaseable to keep it running and then move on to another Marque unless Porsche AG comes to its' senses. The BMW M5, comes to mind. PCNA, keep it up and my attitude will be:"It's been a slice" buh bye.

Actually, the Carrera 4 I saw in the showroom had a sticker of 102K +.
As for what people will be willing to pay for Porsche, just take a look at what new Carreras cost in the mid eighties. They were selling back then for 50K, and that was 20 years ago. Turbos were selling for near 100K in those days, maybe more. I don't think that Porsche is selling their cars for any more money today, when adjusted for inflation, then they ever have. Have you priced a new Ferrari lately? 200K + for a 430. As for me, I'm actually considering a Cayman. |

Hi Fox,
Don't mean to be disrespectful, but: PCA = Porsche Club of America. Just an auto club of like-minded enthusiasts, not associated with Porsche AG. PCNA = Posche Cars North America, the American representative of all things Porsche for the factory, headquarted in Atlanta (or have they moved again?). It is PCNA that is importing the cars, that is producing all advertisement copy (though printed in Germany), and who are responsible for those marvelous ads in all the magazines and TV. Hope this helps.

I just think that there is a threshold on what is a reasonable vs. value in the price of a Automobile. Forget whether or not you can afford it, it's the value associated to the price. Along came the Boxter and I looked at that. My neighbor had one and after 40K miles the engine blew. PCNA offered a 9K fix....His wife offered him an alternative. "Get rid of the car or I'm gone" PCNA would even offer the slightest bit of assistance. So the car went bye bye. I looked to upgrade into a 996, I couldn't get into the styling and the issues relayed to me by several folks/Mechanics. There is a reason that the price of a 996 is well below the ratio of purchase vs. depreciation. Forget the Cayenne, PCNA can't fix them. A couple of years ago, it was hinted at the production of a Boxter coupe. Low and behold we now have the Cayman. All I'm saying is there are issues with the new generations of P-Cars and it's showing in the market place. Let's see how the 997 does and if reports are favorable, I'll upgrade otherwise........

The one thing I disliked about this car is the cupholder for the driver, it falls right over the GPS, go ahead and spill something and their goes some dinero. Other than that, wow for me. Everything seems to fit nicely. When I sit in the Boxster, I always felt too tall because I would be hitting the convertible top. Advantage Cayman S. Software upgrades available to retune what Porsche detuned coming shortly afterward. Advantage Cayman S. Now compare $115,000 Carrera S with options or $75,000 Cayman S with options and another $5,000 for software or modification and you just saved $35,000 assuming you have this to play with in the beginning. This thing can and will run with the 911. Just my opinion.

Thanks very much for the report and the pics. I think a lot of people would be quick buyers at $45-50K, so many are going to wait until cars come off lease and the depreciation factor kicks in. Porsche prices have been very high for a lot of years. I love my 993, but I look at the price that it sold for new and can't imagine paying that much for the car. If a buyer is willing to pay $75K+ for a car, there are lots and lots of choices.

Chris, nice to see you again last night. Too bad you showed up just as Dawn and I were leaving so we didn't have a chance to chat.
The Cayman really is a nice car up close. I'd like to test drive one to see if I really want to pony up for the big payments. On a different note, did you notice that there were FOUR Carrera GT's there last night? Sheesh. That's Newport for ya, I suppose. Two reds, a silver and a black. The guy with the black one had his parked outside and was with some friends and his little four year old boy. Cute little boy. The child seat strapped into the passenger seat was a nice touch too. |

You've really got to spend some time driving around southern California to realize how much of a commuter car the new Porsches are. A Porsche may be an overpriced toy to a lot of the country, but a Boxster is actually more common around here than, say, a mid-line Chevrolet. So, despite the high price, I have no doubt that the roads of Miami, SoCal, etc. will be littered with these cars just like 996 and 986 and Cayenne models.

Yea, did buy the Carrera new and while I was shopping around between the 2 main dealers in the city, the showrooms had several customers mulling around. On Saturday and Sunday you were hard pressed to find a salesperson that was not busy. Not so today.
It is of no concern the worth of the car after 5 years, I would purchase to have the car a very long time. That's one of the reasons I bought the Carrera. Once the car is paid for and continues to run well for many more years after, I can say I got my money's worth. A car that is 6K miles out of warranty needing 9K to fix? Come on... I can see fixing normal things and at times something unusual with a car but replacing engines with about 40K miles...... Don't get me wrong....I am loyal to Porsche but what do you buy? I am not a Cayenne or Boxter person, The 996? no, I'd rather have a '98 993 C2S. The Cayman and the 997? Let's see the feedback after a few months of customer ownership.

Not interested if you can't see the engine. What are they ashamed of?
