Black junk on my front mounts?

Anyone else have this black stuff brushed on over their front shock mounts and behind their VIN plate? Looks like weathersealant?

Garage
As I understand it, that's what it's intended for. However, it doesn't really make a dfference whether it's there or not, at least according to the shop that works on my car (and they've been at this for 25+ years). feel free to chip it off if you need to re-align the front end. Heck, you can chip it all off. It'll look better and cleaner that way.

Heat gun will set you free.

Heat gun is way more effective than a solvent. Use the solvent for final clean up after you tackle the big chunks with the heat gun.

Did I mention a heat gun works good?

I never seen it before I bought my car, and when I saw it on my "new car" I thought the car was having an accident right at that spot and they want to cover the crack. But then I saw pictures of it on the internet, many pics, I know that it's there to absorb noise or/and vibration

I thought it was to help prevent movement of the struts and keep the car in alignment. It probably would have a NVH function, come to think of it...

I'd leave it there. If you can't stand the sight of it, remove the part that is not under the mounts.
