Outsourcing machine work on rear 993 calipers
Hello everyone,
I'm in the process of upgrading my brakes to 993 calipers and 930 rotors. As I learned from this board, the rears will need machining to fit the 911 trailing arms. I thought about taking them to a local machine shop and explaining what needs to be done, but I think there's too much room for error and the possibility of ruining the calipers. Does anyone know where I can send the rear calipers to get machined? Preferably someone who's done this kind of work before. Thanks. - Fernando Last edited by sd_73_914; 12-14-2005 at 10:15 AM.. |

Charlie,
Thanks for the link. I contacted them, but they only do 930 calipers. It seems they don't do much with 993 calipers. Either way thanks for the tip. Anyone else have a lead on this type of machine work? |

VCI will mod a 951 or 964 caliper. The same mods are done to the 993.
http://www.vehiclecraft.com/index.html you may also try Dave (DinFtown) at probraking.net. He has a 993 kit. SEarch for JeremyD's posts on this upgrade for more details.

There are 2 methods of modifying the rear calipers
the way VCI does it is to machine the ears off and convert to radial mount using a caliper adapter as at the front looks something like this ![]() the other way to do it is to fill the exisiting axial mount holes and redrill to 3" on center. The preocedure was most recently described by Kevin Lehman(KTL) in this thread

Bill,
Thank you for the info. I contacted Doug at VCI and he quoted me for machining the ears off and adapters... Cost is more than expected, but it needs to be done. I'll also need adapters for the fronts. Out of curiosity, do you have a preference for either the redrill method or cutting ears off and using an adapter? |

When I was using the 964 calipers I used fill and drill, it's an easy DIY. Doug's method, while technically better is also very expensive.
On the 993RS calipers that I currently use, the ears had to be machined off and converted because there just wasn't enough meat on the ears to redrill for 322mm rotors.
