Ball Joint Removal Tool - Loaner?
Anybody in the Holiday mood interested in loaning out their Ball Joint removal socket for a couple weeks? I am reluctant to spend $50 on a tool that I will use once knowing that there are a bunch of Pelicanites that have one sitting in their tool box? I am reliable and will gladly place a deposit (or replace) if something happened? Any takers??

the removal is best done with a pipe wrench and getting new castle nuts for the reinstall. they freeze on and you WILL more than likely ruin the socket by trying to use it for removal. just my two cents from my past experience.

Ahh, Toby is just hamfisted...:-)
Sorry Toby, I couldn't resist. More to the point, if you have a later model Carrera, the castle nut is recessed to the point of not being able to get a pipe wrench on the nut. I recall a post where one of the guys fabed an easy to make tool which work well for the removal of the nut without buying the $50 tool. You may want to do a search, as I cannot recall who posted the home made unit.

I recommend a dull chisel (completely dulled) and a sledge hammer. Apply to the castle nut, smack with hammer (or use an air chisel if you are so equipped) and the nut WILL come off.
Works well to install also! Chris

I saw the homemade unit and if it is the same one, it was made by Chris Streit. I already removed the one nut with a tool from one of the local wrenches and it came off very easily - so I am confident that I can reuse the nuts and I won't ruin somebody's tool. I just wanted to avoid taking my A-arm to the local wrench when I wanted to remove and install - but it beats $60 for the tool?

I took my a-arms off and my mechanic/friend zapped them off using the right tool and an impact gun in less than 30 seconds. If you destroy the rings with a chisel or pipe wrench you aren't saving much money.

Here is what I used. Don't blame me if you die for not using a Porsche approved tool.

FYI, the nut is not destroyed when using a "DULL" chisel (or a large brass punch). I have had less luck getting frozen nuts off older cars with the proper tool (even broke one trying).
Just a reliable, inexpensive and fast tip...
