Beautiful smoking 993

Hi,

Last night driving home on the freeway here in Perth, Western Australia, a mauve 993 was driving along in front of me. Lovely car I thought.

Then I noticed it was smoking oil like nothing else out of the back of it.

I was driving my g/friends car, sitting behind it thinking that 993 is probably a local car, around 93-94 vintage with probably less than 100k (km) on the clock and has spend almost all of its life in traffic.

Then there's my 85 Carrera. 160k (miles) on the clock. UK car that spent most of its miles on the motorways of the UK - it doesnt smoke at all (I know because ive followed it in the gf's car).

Just goes to show that mileage is not necessarily a good indication and that many of these local cars with low traffic kms are probably in a worse state of wear than my 85 with stratospheric mileage!

Think I'll stick with my Carrera.

You sure it wasn't a 964?

Was it a tail pipe smoke or an oil leaking on the headers smoke? Either way, maybe someone has spent more time pushing it when it is cold than doing maintaince.

993's were produced between '95 and '98, if that helps you at all. For all we know, that car could have a slight mixture problem or more miles your car. But, it is nice to have an older car not be such a smogger.

Best,

Just curious, what is it about 964s that give them a bad rap, don't they hold up? BTW, I don't know squat about the difference between them.

The first two years had some issues that were way overblown. From there, the stigma grew despite the late '91 and newer models being great cars.

People also didn't like the bumpers.

Now, the 993's are showing some issues like really premature valve guide wear, (not on all though) and secondary air injection problems, but no-one cares because they are just so purty.

It`s Christmas! Be nice together!

My 993 is first registered September 1993 (MY 1994), O.K. it was a very early press car, but 1993 993s do exist!
In the US the 993 came a full year later as MY 1995.

By the way, 220.000 really hard Kilometers as a test car for many German Magazines and still not smoking and only needs a quart of oil per 1000 miles!

Some early 964 developed a head to cylinder leak since there was no head gasket and too small mating surfaces. Porsche did repair some under warranty. Repairs are $$$$ since new P/C's were required. That and the unreliable early dual-mass flyhweel caused the bad rep. Once rebuilt properly they are very reliable engines with lots of power.

993's have better flowing exhausts and improved intakes (later varioram) that boost HP. But I still prefer the 964 for its beefier crank and mechanic valve train. They are easier to tune for transplants into earlier cars

HAHAHA that must be the Australia Day celebrations on South Perth foreshore. Notorious for young punks to roam a family occasion starting fights. Must be really hard to hang out in large gangs of thugs...Such bravado.

anyway, yes what a lovely 993, but boy was it smoking. Such a shame to see a nice car basically f****d.

FWiW I have seen low milage 2.7, 3 liter and 3.2 liter smoking profusely.

They all have a problem w/ the soft Cu guides that were used oem. I have also seen high milage examples of each that don't smoke, there is an exception to most rules.

Just at a FYI the 993 crank is far more robust(heavier too) than the 964 crank
