Solenoid or Ground strap?
After the car sits overnight, I turn the key and I get a second or two hesitation before the starter kicks in. After that initial start and I drive the car, the car cranks on the first strike all day long.
It sits overnight and in the morning, I get that heitation again then it's fine for the rest of the day. This happened last year during the winter months also. No issue during the warm weather months. New battery a month ago. The starter was replaced approximately 12 years ago. I check terminals to the starter however the ground strap was green with oxidation. I'n thinking the starter solenoid is faulty or the ground strap needs replacing (will do this because of the oxidation). Any suggestions? Thanks

The ground strap is copper wire so you should expect to see green oxidation. Doesn't effect the grounding properties. However I would clean both ends of the ground strap connections along with the starter connections and see if that has any effect.

Thanks, Kurt V...
Along with the oxidation the strap was frayed a bit on both ends....No biggie, 10 minutes. I just hate to have to jump into the starter if it not necessary.

The transmission-to-chassis ground strap is a regular service item. Depending on conditions it should be replaced long before it shows green corrosion or frayed ends. Particular attention should be paid to the contacts at the transmission and chassis. They need to be perfect surfaces, free on any corrosion. After everything is firmly bolted in place some lubricant (WD-40) will slow oxidation.
Don’t forget the battery ground strap and battery connections. The starter mounting needs to be checked that it is tight. If questionable, remove the starter and clean the surfaces. Of course the B+ connection to the starter solenoid needs to be checked. Depending on the environmental conditions, 12 years may be at the limit for the starter internal connections. If in doubt, exchange for a new one. This is an area of a 911 where insuring new performance is desirable. No one likes to be stranded with “My 911 won’t start.” Best, Grady

I hear ya Grady...
I'll pull everything down this week, replace the strap, clean connections... Gotta get get outta dodge this weekend so the car will sit for a while. If that starter is the culprit then I think a "hi-torque" will be in order... Happy Holidays
