Guards Red Paint

Do all of the paint codes for Guards Red pretty much look thbe same, or were there some years where the shade varied and had a better looking Guards Red paint code?

A lot of "guards red" cars are actually india red. I think india red is the deeper of the two colours.

There was at least one formula change in the color, during the switch from the SC to the Carrera - the Carreras are more orange. It's close but you can see it in certain light.

This was recently dicussed and I stated that the the auto paint store computer (Dupont) said the 2 colors are the same. In other words, the India Red formula superceded the Guards Red. I bought the paint anyway and sprayed another type of car. Sitting next to my Guards Red Boxster, they look the same. The problem with reds is that they are hard to match. Even a two stage clear coat system will look different than single stage in the same color. I found this out the hard way when I had some damage repaired on my previous 911. Red fades significantly and that has to be taken into consideration when matching.

The older reds were made with lead and were single stage. The newer (post 1985) reds were lead free which required different tints so some color variation and fade patterns were very different.

If you need just a small amount of Guards Red or some of the other Porsche and Ferrari colors, you can get a spray can of Testor's at a model shop for aobut $4 -- much chepaer than getting rattle cans made up for $35 or more.

Popular/long-lived colors like Guards Red are still available as touch up paint at Porsche dealers for $4-$8 too.

Having just painted my rear bumper Gaurds Red I can attest that the newer paint code is a little more orange. The paint store mixed up 1996 Gaurds Red for me. I touched up a spot on my rear fender. It is a bit more orange. But not too noticable. The bumper isn't noticable since it is a seperate piece and doesn't have to "blend".

At least in 1980, US cars were "Guards Red" and ROW cars were "Indisch Rot" ("Indian Red"). Came from the same can on the paint line.

India red, Indian red, and Guard's red are all paint code '027' ... the supplier batches may have varied over the years, but the official OEM factory paint code didn't change!

So what's the best rattle can source for Guards/India red for touch up. Would like to spray the under side of my deck lid.

My Guards red car has its hood and doors repainted. It look great in sun and at night, but under mercury lamps, terrible. The older paint is has more orange in it then the newer sections. This is a typical problem with old guards red paint.
