Where can I find these air filters?
I stold this picture from an eBay auction because I've been looking for a set of these air filters. Does anyone know where I can find these? I had a similar set but it was slightly smaller than the K&Ns and I couldn't find a filter element that fit. They are much lighter and less bulky than the cast aluminum K&Ns. Any ideas?

Do you mean the whole set-up or just the filters themselves? Hank at GT racing makes that type out of fiberglass and carbon fiber but they are pricey.

pmo sells a similar set up- their tops are different so water does not nail the air filters when washing or driving the car

I'm looking for the whole setup.. There are very light, stamped metal, with springs rather than the 4 posts like the k&ns

I've not seen those in years as I believe the maker has gone out of business. FWIW, they were not very successful since the springs didn't tension the assembly enough and the stamped steel plates weren't rigid enough to prevent air leaks past the filters. The end results were excessive piston & cylinder wear. I'd stick with the K&N's or Watershields (PMO) as they are FAR better in every respect. |
They were originally made by Filtron for their foam filters. I use them with modified Amsoil foam filters. To provide a better air seal, I smear synthetic waterproof grease along the top and bottom edges of the element.
These are much lighter than the regular K&N Rainshields, but before I found these housings, I fabricated some housings out of aluminum sheet - even lighter. Sherwood http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1135630480.jpg |
I haven't looked recently, but I believe GT-Racing was selling either fiberglass or carbon fiber filter housings for 911's a couple years ago, those would be the epitome of lightness!

Personally I prefer the look of the ones pictured here but if Steve says "no go" then that settles it for me. I ran the R shields when I first installed the new engine and I was having problems with clogged jets.

The PMO water-shields may be steel as they are surprisingly heavy (see my database on Thom's rennlight.com page). The old ones on Webers I used to have were a lot lighter.
I see some CF watershields in my future... |
Hi Randy - You're right the standard watershields are steel and really heavy for what they are. That said, I made some CF waterhields this past fall and was quite pleased with the results. light, stiff and now that I have a decent mold - easy to make more. Plans for the spring are to make the bases and a simple plain top like the ones above.

Are you going to sell them? If so, I might be interested... a few years ago there was a guy named Carbon Joe that was doing them.

Selling them as a complete set and individually is the plan - Through our host ideally.

In the PNW we need water shields - they have skirts that come down like the eaves of a house...

Daman (series900) sells fiberglass k&n style watershields. I think he gets $125/pair for the tops.
