911sc on the salt flats,Few questions
so we have just finished up my 83 911 sc..
1000 miles so far. Euro car, JE 9.8's head work, cryo, cams,ti retainers,SSi 2 to1 exhaust. Ran 130mph indicated on the salt. Seemed a little slow and seems to not pull well above 5500rpm.. where do I start with tuning, How is the air/fuel adjusted, How can I tell if the cams are indexed properly, without tearing in,? Also I have a clunk in pass side rear susp over speed bumps/pot holes, Evertthing looks good and tight on a lift. |

Happe,
I know that you didn't ask for this advise but I just hope that you cleaned your undercarriage really well, a friend of mine went to the salt flats last spring and the underside of his car (vette) is completely corroded, as are the inside of his aluminum rims, all his bolts are so rusted that he is breaking many bolts as he is taking them off to clean up the bottom of the car. So clean that baby really good. Just my .02 Dave.

I'm by no means a expert, but I would imagine if your looking for all out top speed, you might try removing the flag mirrors if you havent' already. That along with taping the gaps between pannels, and the front air vent should help with a few mph on the top end.

I suppose you did not hit the rev limiter in 5th?
At what rpm did it stall? What cam grind are you running? Do you have a dyno sheet? You can not check cam timing, unless you dig into the engine a bit. It can be done in the car though. Why would it be wrong though? Also, the flat six does not respond much to a slight timing difference from spec. Tons of things could be going on. You need to go on a dyno if you have not done so yet. I am thinking fuel/air at high rpm? Are you running CIS? George |

IMO A stock SC in good tune should hit 138 to 140 mph and if you have the same speedo error most of these cars have, you should see an indicated 150.
First, go through the ignition system, timing, plugs, wires etc. When you are all done with that, go through the ignition system again ![]() There's an old saying, 99% of all CIS problems are ignition related. You could make a high speed run and cut the engine and push in the clutch at the same time and then read the plugs to check the mixture, but with the oxygenated gas we have today it is harder to read plugs than it used to be. I hooked up an A/F ratio guage when I installed the turbo on my car, that might provide some clues. running on a dry lake bed is easier on the car than running on the salt flats. ![]() |
