My 87 Carrera has one headlight with a little hole. Both lenses are original and are slightly dull. I am definitely thinking about replacing them. Should I replace them with original H5 headlamps or is a change to H4 a worthwhile upgrade? I would have to get the rings as well for the H4 and have them painted. Anybody have an idea how much painting for the rings would be? How easy is the install? Has anybody compared H5 vs. H4 light? Can you tell a difference?
I appreciate any input! Dietmar 1987 Carrera

I looked into the H4's until I found that you can really rejuvenate the H5's. There is a dessicant packet mounted at the bottom of each lens, which surely should be replaced. Then, using a pair of hemostats or a long rod with glass cleaner and a small rag, reach through the bulb opening and clean the inside of the lens. You will find a layer of schmutz in there that, when removed, reveals a sparkling clear lens, and really spectacular results on the road. You can find used H5's at any salvage place.
Another thing I did was replace my stock fogs with Hella 450 driving lights. They use the same wattage as the fogs, but they are high output pencil-beams with a mile of range! Flamethrowers.

Wouldn't cost much more to upgrade to the H4 which have better focus of the beam than H5's. I think new lens are about $160.00 now. Do a search many posts about this.
