steering wheel jitters-help!

While out on a long drive yesterday, the steering wheel on my sc began to jitter!-all of a sudden there is maybe 1/2 an inch or so of play, up and down, so that I can move the wheel up and down a bit!

-bad bushing? what ya think??

-nothing really happened that i can think of to have caused it, I had the car out for a 250 mile drive to and back from a business trip to Conn, no big bumps, just began to do this?

-wheel is stock, and the wheel it's self seems tight, it's where the column connects behind it that is moving up and down-with the wheel..

You're in luck. There's a topic on the main page that discusses exactly your problem. It's quite common nowadays with the aging of the bushing plastic.

Steering shaft, column bushing topic

I agree...sounds like the bushing. It's a very easy fix. Here's a TECH ARTICLE on how to do it.

Check the simple stuff first:

- Air pressure correct and even L-R
- Have fronts rebalanced at a trusted shop.
- Check the rotors for uneven pad deposits. Blow out radial vanes with compressed air or water.

While it could definitely be bushings, I've found (on my 993) that cleaning out the front rotors eliminated the vibe.

Very easy fix....15 minutes once you have the bushing..It REAL expensive...about 14 bucks or so.

Make sure you get the longer metal bushing instead of the short plastic bushing.

Do you have the socket to remove your steering wheel?

I had to go out and buy a socket to do mine, but the rest was very easy thanks to all the information available on this site!
