Porsche Crest H4 trimrings

o.k., so if I order euro H4 Bosch upgrade headlamps for my 87 Carrera: Do I order matte black? Can these matte black rings be painted? Anybody have pictures of these? What does it look like if you put the paintable rings over the H4 rings (chrome) or black? Anybody pictures of that for comparison?

I think I would prefer to paint the black H4 rings, but everybody seems to say they are "tricky" to disassemble...
So what have you guys done? Who went with the rings that go over the H4 rings, do they look bulky? Who painted the black rings on the H4 and did not use trimrings?

Thanks!

Yes, get the matte black and paint them to suit.

The painted trim rings that go over the chrome ring fit very well. I've had them for a few years and they look fine. I bought a pair of black H4's and will be painting them soon as well. I think you could mask them carefully and achieve a very good result. You just have to order the special double screw setup for the rings that cover the chrome rings.

Sorry no pics (yet).

Good Luck

they looked great on my SC when was going for the "RSA look".
they are very thin and not bulky at all. i'll see if i can't find a few pictures for you.
oh...i just removed my trim rings a few weeks back.
shoot me a PM if you are interested in them.
also, you will need special bolts to install them correctly. i'm certain pelican sells them, but keep in mind they are not inexpensive.
cheers,
Kyle.

Why do you need trim rings? The bulbs come with a ring. I know the typical upgrade most guys get the trim rings but do you really need them? It looks like it can be taken apart, painted & reassembled. Only the wire thingies & the aiming bolts keep it together.

I just got a set for Christmas. btw the price from Pelican has gone from $169 to $236 each in the last 3 weeks.

So, I'm just about to install a set of these. How the heck do you do it? I have the special screws. It looks like I need to install the headlamp and then work the ring under the seal to install it. Is there an easier way?

Hey, I took mine apart. Two of the adjustment screws use a compression fitting that has to be cut off in order to paint them without masking. Does anyone know where I can pick up the exact screw (purchased several but threads differ)?

I think you can replicate the piece you had to cut. A thick brass washer crushed with a pair of dikes will do just fine. That gizmo has to be there, too.

AFA getting those really long screws, I was about to look into that with my specialty house of nuts and bolts. So, if anyone does have a source for those, that would be most helpful.

Now, my other idea is too use a coupling nut to build a longer screw to replace that one that is, what?, nearly 4" long? And, you can always slightly change the thread pitch in the tabs on the housing with a tap. I have found that our 'merican thread sizes of 8 and 10/32 are pretty close to some metric threads. Blasphemy, I know.......

Be thankful you are not having to do this to some H1's. The one screw attaches to a flex shaft and turns aound 180 degress to operate the adjuster.

I have some lights with slotted screws and some with Phillips. They are (or were) all original to their respective rings.

Did you loose or destroy the little cup and rubber piece? I'm thinking on those too. Rubber hose and a flat washer will work, just not concours. Who can see in there anyway?

One of mine fell off and rolled down the street a while back and now its a bit dented up....

So, I purchased the White Primered ring as a replacement from Pelican...and have to find some Guards Red to paint it.

Anyone know where to get some more of those retaining clips on the interior assembly??

thanks

Most likely a VW shop. I found a few online. Search "headlight wire retaining(er) clips" I bet West Coast Metric has them. Maybe even Pelican.
