Third Brake Light

I have a '87 930 and I want to get rid of that stupid looking third brake light. I don't want to move it to somewhere else, I just want it gone.... I've done the search and that's pretty much what everyone talks about is moving it to somewhere else.

So my question is if I remove the light and cap off the wires won't I have 2 holes left in the engine lid? What did you guys do with them? Is there a cover that could be bolted in place or something? I didn't want to get into all the body work stuff.

Wont you fail inspection without the third light?

Nope, we don't have inspections here in Michigan.

I too have and '87 930 and would like to know what's lurking under this horrible looking thing (reminds me of War Of The Worlds). Due to NC inspections, I will be doing the thin LED strip in the rear window, but regardless, this evil eye is coming off!

Bill,
I would be interested in purchasing your brake light.
Please email pakoury@sbcglobal.net with price if you would like to sell.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
I usually try to hang on to the original parts as much as possible, so it isn't for sale. But thanks for offering to buy it. If I do decide to sell it, I'll offer it to you first. Maybe sand_man would sell you his when he relocates it.

Sorry, but NOPE I'm keeping it. I'd love to be able to hand the new owner (not that there is one) a box full of OEM parts. I usually save EVERYTHING that I take off.

I used 3-rubber grommets (center is larger) it created a nice high-tech riveted appearance.

You can use general purpose plastic caps (I found them in a hardware store). BTW, the fit need not be water tight since the lid grills is open to the elements anyway...

The third brake light periscope shares wiring with the engine bay light that is mounted on the underside of the engine lid. So you'll have to:

1. Cut some wires somewhere

or

2. Remove the engine bay light too. That means you'll remove both the periscope and the engine bay light together. There is a male-female harness connector in the engine bay that you can disconnect. Removing both lights allows you to not cut any wires.

I removed mine.

All,

I'll take some pics and post the results tomorrow.

One, you'll have 3 holes left. Two, you go to Sears Hardware,
Home Depot or wherever and buy black plastic plugs to push
into the holes. Easy and looks much better.

I'll point out, however, before someone sees my pic and points it out, that you'll very likely have a ring where the gasket set on the paint. I've buffed as much as I dare and it's still visible.

If you remove this light I recommend keeping it. The next owner may want it.

Still a huge improvement visually.

Since removing mine, I have to disagree with this.
1. Disconnect the plugs in the 3rd brake light.
2. Push the wires back through the decklid hole.
3. Electrical black tape the ends of the connectors.
4. Ziptie the wire to itself, which is routed and clipped under the forward most edge of the decklid.
Done.

This is what I had planned to do.

on USA VIN 930 models, when did the center brake light move to the upper section of the rear window?

I have this also on my '87 and removed it a few months ago (did the wire clipped to itself bit). Some minor buffing and three Wurth rubber plugs and things looked fine.

However, I have since put on the "baby RSR" wing from Getty so the entire process was moot!

I would really like to add the third brake light inside the window, has anyone gone that route?

Chris

I've done this on my '85. Keep in mind that it wont look as clean as a factory install. The factory bakes a black ceramic coating onto the read glass where the light is secured. When using double- sided tape you're likely to see small bubbles as opposed to a perfectly blacked out area. Not a biggie but if you're a perfectionist......

Rick,

I think as long as I use black double sided 3M tape I would be ok with the visual aspect. How painful was the wiring? Did you replace the rear window gasket?

Thanks,

Chris

Can anyone post a after pic to what it looks like with the rubber plugs in place. I would like to see the ring left over too.

I recently sold my "snorkle" on Ebay for $81 + shipping. And it was slightly damaged. Somebody out there wants these weird things. I was surprised but they do have value. We had the holes welded up and repainted when the car was painted. Not a big fan of plugs.

I recently sold a bunch of stuff that I had sitting around my house for years, waiting to give to that mysterious next owner. I realized I would be giving him almost an entire car of used parts. Now I've got some Christmas money that didn't cost me anything.
