Feasibility of adding a turbo ?
Being new to Porsche, i'm going to ask stupid questions.
Can anyone tell me the feasibility of addint a turbo to a 1980 911SC with a 3.0 motor? I can handle doing any required work/fabrication/etc. I just would like to know if this is a common add-on or if there are any major stumbling blocks to consider. Also, what parts would be required to do such an add-on? thanks, Karl |
I hate to say this but in this instance I must - do a search. There are TONS of threads on that subject. One on 2.7L turbos has been active for months and applies to your 3.0L as well. (The search botton is in the top upper right hand of your screen).

tsuter, both you and i.
I did come across a couple of threads, question now is where to get an exact list of the required parts needed? |
l`ve been down this road before so l`ll tell you what l know, maybe it`ll help. l bought a 1984 3.2 Carrera and decided l wanted to turbo it after a year of getting to know the cars limits. l knew that in order to have a safe balanced car that was blindingly fast l would have to upgrade not only the motor but the brakes and suspension. Two years of upgrades and the chassis was ready for more power and l was well studied on what was needed to transform the motor. Do a search.Do another search.Search some more.Buy the books, buy the mags,e-mail the Guru`s.The exact list of parts? Get to know your car amigo, and that will be the easiest part.l`ve said it before,l`ll say it again...you can turbo an SC using well documented methods and factory Porsche parts for less then $2000.00 if you shop it right. l know because l was on that path before l went another route and decided that l`d stop trying to save money. But do a search...this takes time, this transformation you`re talking about.Learn from the sacred documents...Pelican...Porsche...

Gentlemen, I am new to porsche but definately not new to high horsepower/light weight cars.
(1988 IROC camaro, 470hp, c5 vette brakes, spohn suspension, 160mph) (v-8 vegas, 150mph) (the list can go on) Beleive me, this is not some light hearted whim. I fully intend to upgrade every aspect of the car required to handle the extra HP before or as the power goes in. Asking here IS part of the research required to do this right. Being new to P-car, It's a learning curve that I will envelope myself in completely. I'm positive you guys have seen many dreamers come and go here. I too am a dreamer but my dream has just been realized, to own one of the most beautiful, best engineered automobiles in the world. Do not underestimate my abilities or resourcefulness, you will se things done to my 911 that have never been done before. As a mechanic, machinist and fabricator, I have no need to spend countless $$ having the work done. It only takes time and parts. All of your experiences, insights and knowledge is GREATLY appreciated !!! |
Check out the threads by tsuter and rfung, probably the most thorough on the subject of turbocharging the SC engine.
You really don't need to mod the suspension and brakes unless you plan to track the car. On the street the stock stuff is just fine - assuming it is new or in great shape. I have a V8 Monza so I also understand the limitations and mods needed to make more power work in a car not designed for it. Fortunately the 911 SC left plenty on the table when it comes to what the car can handle. The 915 is probably the weakest link, but again, on the street it'll last if you don't beat on it. |
My thought were SS brake hoses, possibly better calipers (depending on what is there) and whatever other items of such nature to bring the car up to date.
I have been reading tsuter posts on the topic already and started the curve. The car came with a turbo exhaust (extra). I'm the kind of person that can make my own plumbing/ducting and enjoy doing so. It's all the little details I need to learn about that makes it all come together as a satisfying project in the end. Correct me if i'm wrong but it looks like 964 cams are on the wanted list? Also, 1980 had 9.3:1 CR factory? THANKS GUYS !!! |

Whoa big talk, I like this guy already! |
Like i have said b4 bolting it on is the ez part -but you have to pick a system that will manage it( SDS) (Electromotive) etc....there are even 2.7 mag cases running with turbos( conservative boost) so the long and the short is there are many yeas and nays -go for the yea I done it group and if you need more brakes or what ever those are bolt on items except for the turbo rear arm in which you have to weld some tabs on the torsion tube...no big deal

tsuter, you seem to be the person i NEED to talk with about this turbo upgrade to my 3.0 CIS powered 911SC.
I'm looking basically for a complete shopping list of what is needed. Here's what i THINK i know so far: 1) T04 turbo (B?, E?, ?) 2) Turbo exhaust system (may already have). 3) Decent intercooler (open to advice). 4) Enrichment injector (open to advice). 5) Wastegate (suggestions?). 6) Piping to plumb it all (i'll buy the pieces and fab my own). 7) 964 cams. I'm quite sure there's more to it than this, just not sure of what? |
Thad-you must be getting really sick of this.
the definitive Tsueter turbo thread the followup thread Read these carefully and all your questions will be answered. A kit is in the works right now. It's all stainless and should be available in about 6 weeks. You'll have to get in line behind me tho:). |
Nope, you can't turbocharge a 1980 911 SC ;)
|
Curious as to why you want to change the cams. SC cams are real good for the turbo application.
|
Well if I can't turbocharge the thing, i'm gonna need a really big shoe horn to make the 383 chevy motor fit !
|
Anyone else care to add advice on the cams ???
