Andial 1984 930

I am looking at a 1984 Euro 930 Andial which purportedly came from California and was brought in for a racing series, modified by Andial and is now a street car. The car will fly, 1st gear is very balky, much lag until around 4 grand, then hold on. Shifts into all other gears. May have a whiff of smoke. I will test for that . Anybody heard of anything like this? Any idea as to value?

Only thing I can tell you is Andial has a great reputation that was developed from the "race" mod's they did to 911 Turbo's back in the 80's - I doubt you could go wrong with the car unless it has not been maintained well. As far as value, well that's really subjective to the buyer. I am sure this car is probably 1 of very few.

The car seems all their and ok. Problem is as yet they have not been able to prove it is truely an Andial engine or car. Without documentation
I can't see paying the price requested. For all I know they got an
Andial breather or sticker and put it on the intake. Thanks for the reply.

Well, don't give up yet, I know there are some Pelican's on this board that used to work at Andial back in the hay days. They might chime in

You might want to drop Ralph a PM (Carrera2.5L on this board)
He used to work at Andial and knows quite a bit about the work they have done over the years. He also knows most of the prople still associated with Andial and may be able to help track down details. He's also a fairly nice guy.

Yes, we have called Andial and they are going to check next week when they open. I hope it is an Andial. The one thing we do know is that the transmission ( read as first gear) is going to require work and I am not likely to just fix 1 gear and not go thru all of it. Thanks everyone for the replys. schamp

I recently bought a '79 930 with an Andial modified motor. Supposedly the mods were done when the car was new. Twin plug, Gruppe B cams, Andial intercooler, etc. I talked to Andial (Mitch) about the motor history. What they told me was all their records are kept by the owners name. So unless I could provide the name of the owner who ordered the work they couldn't really help. So unless you can get the names of the previous owners they may not be able to do much. I haven't had much luck as the CA DMV records going back that far are incomplete. I had the car in their shop at the time doing a post purchase inspection and some engine work.

I think you are right about needing the owners names. We should or will have that when we call Andial back. We are also hoping the data plate (Andial) will help. Thanks

The other problem they stated was even with the records who knows what was done to the engine between the time they build it and now.

Doesn't the performance work that Andial (and others, too) come at the expense of engine life? I think Ruf puts in Carillo rods to help keep the bottom end alive, but not sure of the rest of the supercar builders.

This kind of deal would worry me......

Good luck with it , though!

Poor Ralph, already lost a whole liter on his engine. Maybe now I got a chance to catch up with him.

"....May have a whiff of smoke."

Does it really matter who originally built the engine if it's worn? The whiff of smoke may be a sign the rings are worn - typical of a turbo engine running with increased boost pressure and heavy feet.

More importantly, if the engine needs some "freshening" and the gearbox needs rebuilding, what is that going to cost? Make sure you get everything checked out and you know where it stands before opening the checkbook.

Best wishes,
Sherwood
