cayman

Checked out the cayman monday, and its great looking inside and out. But I hit my head getting in .I'm only 5-8, and getting in butt first ,there's no room. Once in however there's plenty of room. The steering position feels like my 82SC but thats it . Everything else is different. this one had a price of 72k so that was a turn off but ill test drive it on the 12th of jan at neillo in rocklin

No freaking way I pay $72K for a Boxster with a roof.

Let's see, $72K will buy a 93 RSA, 97 993, and left over for a 911SC

Dude, for 72K ill take a low mileage 997 Twin Turbo and smoke the Cayman and look a hell of a lot better in it as I pull away leaving nothing but my wide ass staring back at the little guy- Hey, the Cayman seems to have some good stuff going on but for 48K- oh, and i know, refinement blah blah, i hate to say it but ill take the new Vette, smoke the Cayman, put 15K in the bank and go to Europe for 2 weeks. Then, ill come back and smoke the Cayman again and see how much interest my 15k in the bank is making me.

I think I'd buy a '00 Boxster, drop in a supercharger, stiffen the chassis a little more and it'll be a Cayman killer. I'd probably save $35K in the process. Also, I'd bet the Cayman isn't immune to RMS leak.

I went and looked at it Tuesday
MAN it's small,
I could not fit in it with the seat all the way back. I am 6'3'' 225 but still it's small.

I think they missed the price point but otherwise I love the car and if I had the cash I would buy one

987/997 still suffer from rear engine main seal problems.....

They can bring out new models named after alligators 'till the cows come home....but FIX the inherent design flaws along-the-way... first.....

Oh yeah...wet sump too..

I would buy it, just not new. I would buy it used

I think it's unfair to compare a BRAND NEW CAYMAN vs. a USED anything and say "I'll take my left over money and spend it on this and that.

Why not wait and compare the 2 cars at the same age, say 5 years old, I'll bet the cayman will be half the "used price" of a 993 twin turbo and on the track the Cayman will probably eat up the 993TT.

Just a little info for all of you.

Grand Am racing and other Sanctioning bodies do not allow the Cayman to race in there series. Why???? Because PORSCHE has told them not to allow it. This car will dominate.... and they are affraid it is going to kill the sales of there highly touted 997... SCCA will allow it, but only in T2 class. Against the Corvettes, Mustangs and the like. Again, PORSCHE is behind this as well. Porsche does NOT want this cars potential to be notice in a racing format. The 997 has too much at risk...

Just an FYI...

You guys are forgetting that you pay a premium for being the first name on the title. Just give it two years and when they start coming off the 24 month lease I'll be in line to buy one for prob not much more than a used Boxster. In 2008 a two year old 911 will still be a heck of a lot more than a two year old Caymen. I love my Carerra will never trade it but a "new" car will sure make it a lot nicer to use as a daily driver than one where half the parts are NLA.

I don't doubt this, but do you have any hard evidence?

I think.

A friend of mine who races in Grand Am spoke to several well known teams in the series who are trying to get the car allowed. They were flat out denied with NO reason for the denial. They said the car was not allowed, Period. After more digging into this situation by the teams, my friend was contacted and the above information was given to him. This info was given to him by a team with BIG Porsche ties. Straight from the owner of the team.

Well said, but I don't know about "eating up" anything. It might be a good race between power and handling.

AFA the racing deal, didn't I hear that Porsche was planning a stripped version of the Cayman w/o A/C, etc.?

And for you guys that continue to rip on the Boxster, well, I bet half of you have never driven one. They serve their purpose well. As BRG might have suggested, don't bother to compare it. It's a mid engine roadster, what is there to compare to?

If you don't like it, fine. But as Lee Iaccoca used to say, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way." And quit your whining. It's become very boring.

Saw my first one today - Boxster with a roof. That's about it. Kind of looks a little funny - like junk in the trunk.

Yes, it is fair. They try to sell you a new car in order for you to part with your old car. That fact alone means YOU need to make a comparison between the value of an old car to the value of a new car.

In my case, and with respect to the Cayman, I prefer the various values I will receive for my 73K$ with 3 other vehicles: 911SC, RSA, and a 993. All aircooled, all the times.

Ok,

First off:

Looks:

The Cayman looks wwwwwaaaaayyyyyyyyyyy better than the 997. There is nothing funny looking about it...Boxster with a roof? Maybe soo..BUT it's that roof that makes it so gorgeous. And the lines of the hatch in the back are a perfect "10". The Cayman looks so much more spirited and soulful than a 997. True, 997s are way better looking than 996s BUT both of those models suffer from the 240Z to 300ZX syndrome. They look like fat, bloated, and out of shape versions of the original 911 shape.
The Cayman might not follow the lines of Butzi's vision as closely as a 997, nevertheless somehow the Cayman looks more in the spirit of an early lean, mean 911 than the 997s. I really think Butzi probably loves the Cayman lines.

Price: It is to expensive......BUT if non S version is around 55.000....they will sell like crazy.

This car WILL be a classic along with

1967 911s
1973.5 RS 911
993s

True in the sense that new Z06 rocks nasty. However, my plan is to get a used 'regular' Cayman in about 5 yrs for $35K (10-15K less than a new vette in Dec 2010).

I think time will tell - but I don;t think we are talking classic here. It's a boxster with a roof. A well integrated roof. Yes the roof slope is nice - but in my opinion - where the roof meets the wheel arches it looks a little awkward. I think I agree with Jeremy Clarkson on this one - they should have called it the Coxster.
