factory fill 0w-40 Mobil 1
I read on the Porsche website that Porsche is recommending 0w-40 Mobil 1 synthetic all the way down to the 1984 model year cars. If I were to use synthetic (which I will not due to it's inate ability to find leaks) I would use 15w-50 Mobil 1. Why is the factory suggesting this thinner stuff all the way down to the first Carrera's? Isn't the 0w-40 stuff much thinner?
John

check out of used oil analysis posted there..check the info and reports from Doug Hillary...you'll see that Porsches prefer a 40 weight oil in almost every instance.
BTW, 15w50 M1 is barely a 50 weight...pretty darn close to a 40 weight when you look at the analysis.....0w40 M1 is a very good oil...factory cups are using it now...

You have to realize that many factories are suggesting "thin" oils so they can get their CAFE fleet-average fuel economy figures up..and lessen ( or remove) the luxury gas tax...if such things still exist.
You know..."get the customer through the warranty period"...and screw him afterwards !! BTW....Not all synthetics are "true" ( i.e "man made" synthetics) and therefore not all have the same tendency to leak. Highly refined Class 111 mineral oils ( hydrocracked) are allowed by the US gov't to be called "100% synthetic"...yep...crazy , huh? Not in Europe or anywhere else, but OK in the USA ! Fact is, these oils behave very similarly to "true" synthetics , so the "deception" isn't as bad as it seems. But it *costs* the oil companies much less !. But they still sell it a $4-5 / qt. ( arggh). My point: oils like this ( ex: Shell Rotella-T synthetic 5W-40, in USA) is an oil built this way...and has become a favorite of mine ever since Mobil 1 15W-50 caused my 85 Carrera to leak a bit. Do a search on "oil bible"..my name..and Lubemaster77 for more complete discussions on this topic.

lubemaster is the man. I loved that thread. I have not seen him on for a bit. He still around? If I remember correctly, he was using some kind of roughly 40 weight cocktail in his car.
Hey Oliver88- So are you using 0w-40 in your '87 and your 964?

So 5W30 that I've been using on my 86 3.2 doesn't seem so out of place now since Porsche is recommending 0w-40 Mobil 1.
Also thought I would mention since using 5W30, I no longer have to clean out my magnetic drain plug of that magnetic muck that used to accumulate on it between oil changes. Could that mean a little less wear and tear on my engine? Cheers, Joe |

Thanks lvporschepilot,
I had indicated on another thread that my mechanic told me to use Mobile 1 sythetic 0W40, but most people were used other oils. This gives me more confidence in my new mechanic who stays up to date. Cheers, luis

good info from all...Rotella 5-40 is indeed a Group III oil...technically hydrocracked, but allowed to be labeled as synthetic....
i use Schaeffers 5w40 in the cup car and Chevron Delo 15-40 or Rotella (whatever on sale!) in the Carrera...using M1 0-40 in our 944 NA racecar....thse oils have tested out nicely in each car for the current use.

All the way down to '84 ??
So, seems I just fit the bill. I use M1 0w40 in my '85. No obvious problems (leaks).

good stuff. nice to know some are using 0w-40 with no issues. I read quite a few posts on bobistheoilguy.com. I did not get too much good info off that site. Many of those guys are going off of subjective information and to me, it seemed to have more arguing than a movie discussion website.

I picked up my '89 Carrera and the previous owner was using Mobile 1 0W40 and said it leaks a few drops every 3000 miles. I did an immediate oil change when I got it and I have driven it for 1,700 with no drop in oil level and no drops on the ground yet.
Pretty good for a 16 year old Porsche!
