964 Turbo 3.3 vs 3.6?

Are there any differences between these two engines other than the displacement? Is the 3.6 significantly better than the 3.3 for any reason?

Tyson Schmidt 01-05-2006 06:07 PM

Yes.

The 3.6 is based on the 964 engine. The 3.3 is just the same 930 engine as always, carried over into the new car.

They both have CIS though.

Both being the 3.3 and the 930.....%^B

Hey Tyson, when ya coming up here?

Tyson Schmidt 01-05-2006 06:25 PM

Mike, he's wondering about the difference between the '91 C2 Turbo engine, which is a 3.3., and the '94 Turbo 3.6 engine.

The Turbo 3.6 is a beast compared to the '91 with the 3.3. Much less turbo-lag, and overall power. Better driveability too.

Mike - ya just might have a better chance gettin' Tyson to visit if you change that avatar.........

Tyson,
3.6 is 360 HP/340 tq and 3.3 is 320 HP/324 TQ with both cars 0-60 in 4.8 sec so i have no idea

where you got these facts from:rolleyes:
I drove both cars back to back, yes i drove them twice back to back just to feel the difference and no i didn't feel any difference at all.
Bottom line:
NO OVER ALL POWER DIFFERENCE,NO DIFFERENT DRIVEABILITY BUT YES POSSIBLY SLIGHTLY LESS TURBO LAG ;)

Oh, I may add...

The 3.3-liter Turbo has manual steering, no ABS, no airbags. :)

The 3.6-liter Turbo has power steering, ABS, airbags, and weighs 200+ pounds more. :(

You are talking about the 930 but the original post is about the 964 3.3 Turbo (964 Turbo first came with a 3.3 then later 3.6)

jrl 01-06-2006 05:04 AM

By '94, were earlier '89-'91 issues with the 3.6--seals, head gaskets, distributor belt/venting--cleared up in the Turbo version?

Sounds like you're going off of the conservative factory claims. Car and Driver, Road and Track, etc. all were getting 3.9 to 4.2 0-60 times with the Turbo 3.6.

I've driven them both as well, and the '91 seemed slower than a pre-90 930. I was underwhelmed. The Turbo 3.6 on the other hand felt like the power matched the chassis.

If you put an open style intake and a quality aftermarket exhaust (headers not required)the lag is reduced greatly, especially when humidity levels are low.

So what I'm hearing is that I should buy and modify a Turbo 964 3.3

No, Get a Turbo 964 3.6L :D

I have to respecfully disagree with Don and Tyson on this. I owned a 91 3.3 that I had the pleasure of PCA racing last year. I have a Porsche exclusive repair shop in Ct. and have probably 8-9 3.3s and 3-4 3.6 964 Turbos that we maintain/race and track prep. In stock form the 3.6s are noticably quicker however I think a 3.3 with headers and a good muffler (Hooker aero flow or Borla XR10 for example) will definitely outrun a stock 3.6. When you add in the fact that there is a STEEP price premium for 3.6s I think the 3.3 is the smart buy. I've also owned and worked on many 930s and IMHO there's no comparison The 965 does everything better. My current car is a 04 GT3 and I honestly think my 91 965 was a more exciting car to drive.

Thanks for everyone's input. My main concern was whether or not the 3.6 was a lot better than the 3.3 for whatever reason. It sounds like it has a marginal advantage, but not enough to justify the increase in price and nothing that can't be solved with basic upgrades.

Now I just have to decide between the 964 and an Elise...

*ducks*
