Voltage regulator replacement External
I am waiting on a new Regulator from our host and want some advice/instruction on how to remove the old external and replace with the new one. I cant see what is holding it on to the plate/board it is on. Do I need to remove the big electrical type circuit board and then unbolt the regulator or is there an easier way. All help is welcome. Thanks

Hmmm, doesn't look like the V-reg in my '72. Maybe if you can remove it's cover, you can see how it's fastened?

That's a very stock looking Motorola VR. Underneath there is a three prong plug. CAREFULLY unplug the plug, and remove the screws that hold the VR to the electrical console. Then screw the new one back on in the same spot and CAREFULLY replace the plug. If there is any kind of a radio-supressor attached to the plug on the harness, give it the "float test:" throw it into the nearest body of water and see if it floats. If it does, re-use it.
It's very simple.

They're down there, behind the plug, and opposite the plug. You can see them if you have a mirror or if your head is tiny enough to fit between the intake pipes and the VR. Should take a 7mm socket and about five minutes...careful with the plug.

Thanks all! Will let you know how it goes. This should calm my lights and tachometer and quit making my battery fart! boy the smell!! No acid got out, but the 2 times it made stinky had me check each time for a soiled trunk. Thanks again.

New one is in and working!! (well at least it starts and runs)
Had to go to Wal-Mart to get a set of Stanley 1/4 drive sockets. There are two 7mm sockets holding the regulator on. Glad I bought the extension set for $6 more. Went fairly easy after the right tools were on hand. First, disconnect the battery, Next pull the 3 prong wire set out of the old VR. Then make sure you have a 1/4 socket set with a 7mm or a Wal-Mart nearby and the wifes car. Then take that giant heater hose off so you have some room. Unscrew the (2) 7mm sockets (don't loose the little buggers) and voila! off it comes. Have the new VR held in place by the Wife or assistant while you put the little 7mm screws back in. Plug the 3 prong wire set back in and fire it up. Only hitch was after I got it in, reconnected the battery and started it up (fire extinguisher at the ready) I saw some smoke. Immediatly shut her off and went looking for some burnt wire or worse. Then I realized she always lets loose a small puff of oil when started after sitting awhile! Will see if the Tach goes crazy or the lights get bright tommorrow. Life is good once again. Sorry about the book. Thanks all |
