Gratuitous before and after home fuchs refinishing pics

Did this in about 8 hours total this weekend. Used the refinishing fuchs for dummies thread as a guide but combined with the cneilsen, bob tilton scotch brite method. I didn't want the high polished look, so went with the brushed aluminum look. Still going to do more to bring the shine down. Left imperfections on purpose. Didn't want wheels that looked brand new, wanted wheels that still showed some of their age (40 years).

1) 3m light rust wheel on a drill (Walmart)
2) medium synthetic steel wool (Home Depot)
3) fine synthetic steel wool (Home Depot)
4) 3m green tape (Home Depot)
5) Rust Oleum satin black and primer (Home Depot)

Lessons learned:
1) take your time taping
2) stripping does not have to be perfect and it can still look great
3) you can use playdo to fill in the lug nut seats to keep the paint out

Ugly before pics:

Pretty after pics:
In the second picture you can see the scratches that give it the brushed look. Not planning on taking them out, they look great.

Did you ever post pics of these on the car? I could not find them and after how much time I spent trying to get a polished look I am changing to this look.

Thanks
Phillip

LOL - I wish. It will be a couple of years before they make it back on the car. When I did the wheels I thought I had a decent car on my hands. That was before I found the rust. The car is stripped to the bare tub and I'm welding new sheetmetal.

Oh I thought they were for another car. I have seen your thread on the white car. Looks like you are making good progress.

I thought mine was bad... talk about a pain in the a$$. cut, shape, weld, grind... repeat... over and over and over... oops f'ed that up... redo. Mine is almost ready for the media blaster... thankfully. GOOD LUCK!

Nice job on the wheels. I got a kit from Caswell to do my cookies. I'll post when they're finished... first I have to start.

The wheels came out great. Perfect in my mind. It is unfortunate that your car is a mess right now but having something done and sitting there waiting always helps the project along. You can visualize them on the car with shiny new paint, new tires, perfect interior, all ready for fun.
