Definition of a Classic Porsche ?

According to the 911 & Porsche World Article on the Dec. Issue , the 356 Coupe , the 911 1973 RS among others are not true "Classic Porsches " so my next question will be so what will be the "True Classic Porsche Cars"? . If you go to the Official Porsche Web Site they have a tab that shows : 912 , 356 , 924 , 928 and others as Classic Porsche Models.

Others have stated that a Porsche that has more than 30 yrs old is a true classic.

Classic is a word with a lot of definitions. Popular usage says any car over 25 years old. The Classic Car Club of America says it has to be manufactured between 1925 and 1948.

I guess the CCCA guys are old and uptight enough to think of a pre-1925 car as just a 'beater.'

Jack is right, it's a very subjective word.

I've heard the '25 year old' definition... but, not just any old car would get 'classic' status. It has to be a car that inspired a feeling, not just a hunk of steel with wheels. Porsches definitely have it. Dad's old 75 AMC Hornet station wagon, for instance, does not.

So, 'old' doesn't mean 'classic'. It's more of a combination of 'old' and 'cool' or 'unique'.

A Classic is any car in which the owner is likely to die while waiting for the restoration to be finished.

In my opinion:

A car doesn't have to be all that old to be a classic. Modern classics might include the McLaren F1, Porsche 959, BMW Z8, Porsche GT3 (yeah you heard me)...everybody can pick a few cars that fit on this list.

At the same time - all old cars aren't automatically classics, take Chevrolet Citation for example. You'd have to be pretty bent to consider that a classic. Likewise the Pontiac Sunfire or Hyundai Accent twenty five or even thirty years from now.

As far as Porsches go...the impact bumper cars are still too plentiful and too new to be considered true classics. They'll be considered classics in teh future though and in my mind the early 911 are classics already... no doubt about it.

In my book all 911´s are classics - at least those air-cooled.

We are all 'living the legend', as it were.

According to my insurance company, any car that is more than 30 years old is a classic car in Sweden.

"owner is likely to die"

From my scientific observations I've discovered that here are actually two factors or components to this Law of Classics (actually, it's an empirical generalization -- but hey, who's counting...)

1. Classics tend to be owned by older people who may have limited time left.

2. The cars are (now) rare enough that parts are hard to get, expensive, and many shops will try to restore the cars even if they don't really know how.

Both contribute to the liklihood of the owner dying before the car is finished.

The 911 is not yet a true classic - even the early cars. You just wish you were dead sometimes while restoring it...

Selected by whom? I mean, and who appointed the selectees?
Hell, since I bought my car when it was two years old, I still think of it as a pretty new car....what's with this "classic" krap???

I don't know about "classic", but I do know the 25-year rule applies to cars being "vintage". In order to belong to the VVWCA (Vintage VW Club of America), the VW must be at least 25 years old, for that is when it becomes vintage. So by now, all the older air-cooled VWs qualify as vintage.

As for classic, I think that is in the eyes of the beholder. I consider both my vintage cars to be classics as well. So is a 1915 Model T Ford, the CCCA notwithstanding. I bet there is a Ford Pinto club out there, and those folks might even consider their old POSs as classics.

It's not quite 20 years old, but I consider it a classic!
