De-celeration.....whats happening here?

Can someone explian to me what is going on here. When I come to a stop the idle drops to zero, pauses and then comes up to set idle (950 rpm). This has been going on lately for several days and I am not sure how to trouble shoot this. I checked the vacuum hoses to the bell shaped (decel valve) behind my air box and they are okay. This has not affected general performance, but once in a while the alternator light will flicker for an instant until the idle comes up. Those wonderful CIS units! Help......

Thanks
Bob

I had the opposite problem on my '78SC, but the fix might be near identical.

The decel valve you mention has a threaded post and a locknut that is on pretty tight. When my car would not come down to idle after a run, but would remain at 2K, I suspected this valve.

Sure enough, loosened the locknut, turned threaded post in, and locked it back up. No more problems.

For you, you might consider loosening that locknut, threading the post OUT (CC-wise), then locking it back up. This might (don't know the '73s) let the idle float a bit before coming to idle, and prevent it from slamming down to near zero as you have described.

Good luck,
Jw
