Fuel Pressure Regulation and Starting Issues in Early CIS?

CIS is a curse sometimes and I am not sure where to turn on this one.

Replacements- All within the last year: New fuel pump, accumulator, injectors, fuel hoses, fuel filter, air box, intake runners, cold start valve, fuel tank refurbished, warm-up regulator, new fuel tank internal fuel filter, vacuum lines. Gee whats left? No thermotime switch in this car.

Fuel distributor - not replaced as yet.
Micro switch never touched.

When I start my car I turn the key and I hear that old familiar sound of CD and fuel pump running and I also hear the fuel running from the tank at my feet to the injectors in the back. Quite animated and ancient! Lift the hand throttle and 5 out of 10 times it starts right up. Warm start is no better even with a new accumulator. Second turn of the key does the trick....

What is happening to fuel pressures? If the 1973.5T fuel pump has an internal check valve, why is starting such a hassle? Is their something I am missing here thats in the engine that helps to maintain the pressure, besides the accumulator that may not be doing its job?

I have been living with this since I owned the car for over five years and after years of coming to this board and reading everyones CIS issues, I often walk away thinking its "it is what it is".

I caught some hell here for having my tank refurbished (rusting bad and boiled and coated with red-coate), but so far so good.

Why with just about every component replaced, starting is such a pain in the ass, especially after so many adjustments.

I'll take anything.....

Please check your.....

Bob,

Please check your fuel, and system pressures. Then observe your residual pressure for a period of time. The in-line fuel check valve might not be retaining enough fuel in the line.

Next, check your CSV. Are your ignition timing and distributor set at the correct positions? A big vacuum leak once gave me a starting problem too. Wish you luck......

Have you checked to see that the cold start valve is getting power when the hand throttle lever is pulled up and the starter is turning over? If the linkage "chain of parts" is out of adjustment somewhere, then you may not be closing the microswitch on the driver's side of the throttle body. Are you experiencing any backfiring upon startup? Jim

Jim.
Once in awhile I will get a mild backfire on startup. The system is very tempermental. I am getting to the point where my inexperience has required a trip to the shop and a run thru the systems.

Thanks
Bob

Aside from all the above, have you checked ignition items, ie points, plugs, wires, cap and rotor?

I recently had some popping @ startup. Found a broken head stud while doing a valve adjust. Have you checked for pulled ones?
