cant find bulb for key....

I have been to Radio Shack several times and still cant seem to get the exact light bulb that works in the lighted key (i have figured out using my spare that the bulb has to have a gold/copper tip, bulb's with silver ended tips dont seem to work).

Anyone know where I could find one locally? Seems silly to purchase such a small thing over the net.

Just saw one here for $5.95: www.*************** -- you can find it hunting around in there.

I don't know if this will work for you, but you might consider the LED conversion shown on the second half of this page:

There are very few things you could be doing wrong. It's most likely that you have the leads reversed on the LED. They are polarity sensitive, so the batteries and the LED leads must be in the correct order. Also, be CERTAIN you got the correct LED and battery combination. There are many different LED's which require many different operating voltages. Your battery combination must add up to the correct voltage required by the LED you are using (assuming you are using multiple batteries, in series).

Hey Alex, don't feel bad. I read a thread similar to this one and went to Radio Hack and got the bulb mention above and no go. I'll go back and try again later. I think the battery in the key is 1.5 v and the led requires 3.6 v to work. I tested the battery against the old buld and works fine. I touch both leds on the battery with the led and nothing. I'll let you know if I find something. By the way, are you still doing the runs with Scott, Chris and the OC guys. I'll be grounded for a bit. We just had a 5 week old baby boy. Talk to you soon, I am the guy with the red 930 cab from LA.

The easiest way to fix this is simply turn the batteries over. And if you tape the batteries together (at the sides obviously) it will be easier to get everything back into the key case.

zoanas,

ya tell me about it! i know there is VERY little to do wrong! can you imagine how bummed i was that it didnt work! hehehe i guess i should re-think rotating the tires this weekend! hehehe... but ya, i followed the instructions to the T.

i DID get the correct LED and BATTERIES,..... i checked and double checked before i left radioshack.

jeff,

well at the time assumed the info on the thread was correct and bought the items as described..... and yes i plan to make the run with the guys..... and congrats on the bambino! wahhooo!

capt carerra,

thanks for the idea on the batteries,......

and for the GOOD news....

i got my flamethrower working this morning! as i mentioned i followed the directions exactly, "The short post goes to the battery, and the long post gets wrapped securely around the copper pole." which is what i did..... SOOOO i switched it around and WALAAAAA!

Awesome. One of the most satisfying mods, in my view. You see it every time you get in the car at night.

(Somewhat) silly question -- the key blanks for the lighted key heads are (relatively) ridiculously expensive ($26.25), even from our host. Is it possible to cut down one of these to make it work in the lighted key head?

Here's the blank for the lighted key head:
