got an adjustable shift light kit from summit racing. then soldered on a pull up resistor to increase the voltage signal so the oe tach and the shift light would work. we put the shift light as an led in the tach- pick a red or orange (green or blue is too obscure) and install the guts between the clock and speedo. Most later 74 up cars have a hole behind the vinyl so its an easy install. If you carefully peel the rpm decal off the summit cannister, you can reattach it to the dash face and hold it in place with the nut/washer/ knob that the limit light came with.
its a nice touch that is effective and trick looking sorry no pics- client was in a hurry to leave once we finished it

i have a big red oil pressure warning light in place of my clock.
i think a cool alternative would to be replace it with a half white/half red round tailight (911R style) then use the white side as a shift light and the red side as a oil pressure warning light.

Nonono. You want a NICE one. Size of a lipstick with a small control box you have in the trunk:
It can be had at Summit and others. You can see how to install it here. Turning the Tach with Rev limiter TDC It is VERY bright and you can set the rpm it goes off at with by inserting different 'beans' into the control box. In the pic above you can see the 3.0 bean, which is used for testing at 3000 rpm. George |

I found that I was unable to always see the shift light that was integral with my VDO Memory Tach (direct 5 inch plug-in to dash, but need to relocate turnsignal and hi beam indicators), so I used the wires which were provided for an external shift light and instead wired them to a loud Radio Shack buzzer. The buzzer is suction cup mounted to the very bottom left corner of the windshield. Very stable and loud. Works great.

neat idea howard- may even work with our loud 6 cyl megaphones?- OR
you could hook up an old cell phone to blast a favorite ring tone in your helmet- hmmm..... Sammy hagar- " i can't drive 55!" the red led in the tach is pretty bright- your peripheral vision catches it well

The rest of the story on my "shift buzzer" is that I have it set to go off at 200 RPM before the MSD limiter, so I know the end is near when I hear the buzzer. I have the selectable limiter on my MSD, so if I need another 200 RPM on an autocross straight, I just dial it up.
