Can u only pump gas slowly?

I hate pumping gas in my 85 911. The car can't accept gas as quickly as the pump can pump it. The automatic turn-off usually cuts off if I pump it quickly. If the automatic turn-off doesn't work properly it spills out the top. Is this common or unique to my car?

Happens on mine, too. I have to listen closely to the tell-tale sound of the gas rushing up the filler neck so that I can let off the handle...

I find that regardless of fast or slow, if the pump nozzle is all the way inserted, it continually cuts off. I have to back the nozzle out so it's about half-way (or less) in, then I can pump fast. Every time I fill it I have some paper towels grouped around the nozzle and fill hole to ensure that I get any spray that might happen due to pumping fast with the nozzle backed out a bit, but so far this method has always worked for me. It is somewhat of a pain but I find that just having/driving this car makes any of these minor inconveniences worthwhile.

Describe 'faces away' ? Does this mean trigger bar on top vertically instead of bottom vertically ?

Sounds like you're putting the nozzle in too far. I have the same issue, and I just put the tip in until I can let it sit by itself.

I back the nozzle out a little and it seems to work fine. No overfill problems for me (knock on wood).

Yep, two solutions. THe solution that I used was to only just barely put the tip in. I know, not nearly as much fun but gets the job done quickly without looking weird, or two as others have said, insert the nozzle normally and then turn it arount 180*. Either will allow you to pump full speed.

I wonder, do the nozzles in Germany look different, do they pump slower or is there some other issue that causes this. Maybe it's just the fuel vapor recovery stuff that's built in these days.

Oh yeah, I also play the "just the tip game". Works every time.

Stick your finger between the steel filler neck surface and the rubber mating surface of the pump. This allows for a "vent" and will defeat the automatic pump shut off by reducing the backpressure to the nozel. Also defeats the vapor emissions control of the pump - but they shoudln't make us use a sustem that doesn't work.

BTW - I have the same problem for years with my 2001 MBZ.

Well, we don't have the fuel vapor recovery rubber neck thing around the nozzle and have the same problem... YES even in Germany I've had this problem.

I use the tip and have some paper towels around the filler neck... and keep an eye on the amount that has gone in to predict when it would be close to full.

Whatever you do, never let the pump attendant do it for you, that hardly ever works (at least the first time) without spilling fuel all over the trunk, wheels and everywhere else where you don't want it.

Same thing with my '85. I moved it around so the trigger faces the rear and it fills without shutting off.

Turning the nozzle around means the hose points straight up in the air and the guy behind the window in the station looks at you like you are trying to set the place on fire.

It is the only way that works for my 88

Yep- just turn the nozzle 180 and it works fine every time. (learned it here on Pelican). Have a paper towel ready to catch any drips as it's a little awkward taking it out and you don't want to dribble gas on your paint.

Edit: Oh yes, and remember to put the gas cap where you won't forget to put it back on or you'll be buying another and a spare (ask me how I know). Somehow it's easy to forget when you've been fiddling with filling the tank this way.

Has the tank and filler neck ever been removed from the car?
I had a car .. not a P car that had a filling problem. It turned out that the tank and neck had been removed and an inner vent tube was missing.. this created a back pressure problem all the time until I found out that the part was missing.. Do P cars have such an internal additional vent neck???

Same problem, I think it's related to the angle of the tank pour, and the vapor recovery equip. The pumps with the spring loaded plastic baffel thing are a real pain in the ass!

-I fill by, putting the nozzel in all the way, and using the drip flaps-rubber flaps-around the hole to create a seal around the pump, this seems to work pretty well.

-I've never had a fuel spill/over fill issue though, the pump should shut off regardless of your tank design, because it is measuring internal pressure of the tank it is filling. If you don't insert the tip of the nozzel into the tank neck, maybe this would cause spilling as it would not read the pressure in the tank.

My 78sc is the same way. If I fill it too the top gas leaks out all over the street. Alot of gas so I never fill it all the way up either.

Same problem. Problem solved by using the method DB_NC_83SC, Zoanas, and im4duck describes. Need to try flipping the nozzle 180 degres, however (once the car is out of winter storage).

Same issue with my '85 (in Sweden).

Most annoying aspect is that I canīt put it in 'automatic' and sit back in the car looking cool. I have to stand holding the damn thing like a rookie.
