Valve cover nuts
I will be using silicon gaskets.
Do I need to use a torque wrence or just snug them up with a 1/4" drive? I may have some difficulties getting the my 3/8" drive torque wrench to fit in all the places.

If you have a torque wrench I would use it, otherwise don't sweat it especially with silcone gaskets. Just don't overtorque, 6 ft-lbs is not much. If you see the gasket squeezing out you have overtightened.

OEM gaskets with green silicone bead over gray graphited composition gasket, or solid red silicone gasket???
It makes a big difference, because the red gaskets use lower spec [included in the instrucions in the bag] than the factory gaskets!

Wiha is having a sale on torque-sensing screwdrivers ... for those who are really anal...

Absolute torque numbers are not as important as even torque between all the nuts on one cover. As long as you think your calibrated wrist can do an even torquing of all the nuts, you should be fine. I can get my 3/8" drive torque wrench in most places and do the remaining nuts by feel.

If you are using the pure red silicone gaskets, they only like a little tiny bit of torque. Around 3 1/2 to 4 ft. lbs.
Make sure they are clean and dry with no oil or anything on them and just barely snug them down. if you tighten them too tight they will try and squeaze out and will leak. if you just tighten them a little bit they will seal great. I use them and like them. i don't use a torque wrench, I do it by feel but I've been wrenching for many, many years and that gives me a bit of a feel for it. |
