V8 conversion

My fellow Porsche lovers. I'm a neophyte to this site, so it this question is sacrilegious please forgive me.

Can someone tell me if I can swap the engine in my '74 911 with a V8? If so, do you know where I can go?

I heard from someone that there are kits available to adapt a Chevy V8 to my 911. I was thinking that if it is true, I'd like to look into it.

Do a search there are several threads on this. Better get your fire suit on.. The flames are sure to follow.

BUT, subaru swaps weigh less than stock 911's.

That renegade site got me thinking. Screw the 911. Why not a chevy small block kit for my toyota:D Someone probably has one in development ...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1138032350.jpg

74SilverBullet 01-23-2006 07:38 AM

Thanks guys, I feel a bit more "edumacated" about the engine conversion. I am even considering, at the behest of "mschuep", to drop a V* on my wife's Passat!!!!!!!!!

Porsche_911s 01-23-2006 07:40 AM

If you want to do it, do it to a 1974 XJ6.

PRE-H20 01-23-2006 07:45 AM

alexander911,

I just did not know better. In retrospect, my question was tantamount to walking thru USC with a UCLA shirt. I'm glad it's only cyberspace, otherwise I'd be hospitalized from the beating by now.....

;)

74SilverBullet 01-23-2006 07:53 AM

Well, actually, you people are pretty cool..I'm glad I found you, especially when I attempt to replace the gas tank.....

PRE-H20 01-23-2006 08:05 AM

74silverbullet,

you have me CRACKING UP over here,.... that was funny..... i was thinking oh-oh..... poor guy, but hey if you want a v8 in your 911 that your business, "not that there is anything wrong with that!"

"was tantamount to walking thru USC with a UCLA shirt,...............

OR walking into pacbell with the blue teams jersey on! (I'm from SF and a diehard giants fan, i have a hard time saying that D...DO..DODG........ you know the word im trying to say, the blue team is just easier for me to say!...... my ex-girl lives in glendale and she is a DIEHARD blue team fan..... boy did we have some fights! hehehe"

but ya.... you didnt know any better, at least the hounds of hell didnt descend upon you posting that thread..... :)

glad your safe,... and enlightened! :)

74SilverBullet 01-23-2006 08:14 AM

alexander911,

I figured I can always use humor to undo my blasphemous post....

About the Giants and Dodgers, man, there is some intense hatred between these people. I have gone to a few Dodger games (don't really care for baseball but I get free tickets) and the only time I have seen major ruckus (fights, shouting, name-calling, etc) is when LA plays SF.

Anyhoo, have a great day and I look forward to more insightful posts b/w us.......

This dates back to when both teams were in New York. The lowlight of the rivalry was when the Giant's Juan Marichal cracked Dodger catcher John Roseboro over the head with a bat. Ironically, at the end of his career the Dodgers signed him, but he was a bust and they ended up releasing him.

Scott,

Ouch!!!! That must have given John a wicked headache (at the very least) I did not know that both teams originally hailed from the Empire State. Is is true the Lakers are originally from MN? I figure it is because, from looking around, we don't have a whole lot of lakes in LA... ;)

PRE-H20 01-23-2006 08:59 AM

:) ya there is a little tension..... not that i am part of that...... as a matter a fact i have NEVER set foot in D.. DO.....DODG.... the blue teams stadium...... i swear if i set foot there the ground will split open and take me straight to the hot place..... my girl tried for 2 years to get me in that place.... hehehehe :) :)......... even tried to get me to take her mom who is even a bigger fan..... i said im sorry i cant! :)

anyways.... yes, a v8 in 911 comment is like walking into the lions den with a couple streaks strapped to your ass.

scottb,.... agreed, the "tension" is embedded for a couple of generations..... im working on getting my nephews to have an open mind about the D... DO....DODG...... the blue team....... (wink wink)

PatrickB 01-23-2006 09:38 AM

As long as you keep it German, you should be OK Bullet!
Find a used 928, or Cayenne motor to put in that car, and the diehard's here should be ok!. :D :D :D

74SilverBullet 01-23-2006 09:48 AM

PatrickB,

How was that for keeping it German? ;)

PRE-H20 01-23-2006 09:55 AM

ya what he said! :)

patrick, glad to heat your got your car running, i know you had been trying for a while, did you kick and spit on the pesky #5 injector? im happy for you. im having issues on rough running myself, i hope to make the next run for sure.....

74SilverBullet 01-23-2006 09:58 AM

PatrickB,

I forgot..errr, I mean...Ich vergessen...arghh!!!...I forgot to ask you if it's easier to mate a V8 from a 928 to my 911, comparatively speaking, than a Chevy. Do you know other miscreants, or infidels, like myself that have tried to do something as egregious as putting an American heart into a German body?

74SilverBullet 01-23-2006 10:07 AM

Patrick,

Love that Ben Franklin quote...I may abscond with it.... ;)

Nah... Just kept throwing $100 dollar bills at it.... What a change though... Neat to have the engine finally running the way it's supposed to!

Bullet~ Yes I have seen it done! Renegade is the place if you're seriously interested. I met the owners, and toured their shop last month in Vegas. These guys do a very clean conversion, and really know what they are doing!

I was kidding about putting a 928 motor in. I get a big laugh from how the purest on this site that get so pissed off though, about altering a Porsche by putting a different motor in (SBC V8)... Yet they have no problem altering an early 911 by putting in a 3.2 or 3.6 motor in place of the 2.2/2.4 motor...

After you ride in a 914 with a 500 hp SBC motor and pass up a 3.2 Carrera like it's a Yugo, you too might become a believer and lose the Uber Attitude...

atlporsche 01-26-2006 04:07 AM

indeed.

instead of an american heart, I went japanese in a 912. Subarus are flat motors too. without all the accessories, they resemble 616's and type IV's quite a bit.

as I tell people what I did..."I'm just reuniting the orginal axis of evil...this time for awesome."
