newbie-time

Hello to all Porsche Enthusiasts!

Another newbie here. I've been searching and surfing the forum every day. Lots of info. Besides getting the 101 Projects for your 911, what else should I get to begin my addiction? This is my first porsche. Last Sunday it was in the 40s but it was sunny so I washed my car. I nearly froze and I had to pound the ice out of the garden hose with a sledge hammer. Some of my neighbors thought I was crazy, but it was all worth it.

Get the Bentley manual. In conjunction with the 101 project book and this forum you can tackle almost anything

Is there a Bentley manual for a 1970? The earliest I could find is for '78-'83 models.

congrats- that thing looks awesome- get some microfiber towells and 6 dollar quick detail spray so you can keep it perfectly clean with no extra h20 (rust is nasty) in about 1 minute every other day- black is the best when clean! THEN, drive it hard and properly- it'll thank you! Welcome to the club!

Beautiful Car, and Welcome! I must say, I also am a fan of the Duck and would compliment you car very nicely. I also like the chrome mirrors, but that is just me.

Definitely consider autocross -- that's a great way to learn how your car drives. I bought my first 911 last spring and besides the long road trips, driving in the mountains, all day blasts across the prairies, 'round town jaunts, and working on it, autocrossing is some of the best times you'l have with it. Its a great way to meet oter kindred spirits, as well.

101 Projects is an excellent book, I found the Bentley manual not useful enough. It has incredible detail on the engine and transmission and little else. A lot of "installation is the reverse of removal" BS.

I recently did a caliper rebuild and there wasn't even an exploded view. One of Wayne's projects is brake rebuild and this provided the info perfectly.

I don't know if they have a Bentley Manual for your year but don't stress it if you can't find one.

As mentioned above, Autocross and Driver's Education are a blast. They also provide a yardstick to help you decide which improvements to your car. (should I get a strut brace or some nice seat covers....hmmmm)

By far the most valuable resource is this BBS.... just remember to do a search before you ask about a well discussed issue. I find the opinions expressed here are usually nicely qualified, such as "If you plan on taking it to the track, I would.... blah blah blah" or "If you are mainly concerned with looks, I would .... ".

A great bunch of knowledgable individuals.

Amir,

Congrats! Never look back because it keeps getting better.

I live in Libertyville, if you are ever inneed of a hand or help with a problem let me know.

I run DEs and its about as close to crack as you can get without a lighter. But I will warn you, be careful; its a very VERY slippery slope. My car started out near stock and now its closer to a full on race-car.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

Matthew,

It's good know that there are other Porsche guys close by. I will let you know if I need anything. Thanks again. I believe there is a shop in Libertyville I'm not sure of the name..have you ever used them for anything or do you do a lot of your own work?

You are thinking of Perfect Power, and yes they do Porsche work and its good but it will cost you an arm and a leg. I do all of my own work but if you need someone to work on your car there are several local guys who are extremely skilled and do work Porsche work at a very reasonable cost. (they are members of this board)

But keep an open mind about it. I know everyone has heard this before but a year ago I thought doing an oil change was the extent of my mechanical ability. That said, 2 months ago I just finished dropping the motor to replace the clutch and do a completely suspension upgrade...

My Porsche definitely needs some work and one of the reasons why I got it was to learn about the car and work on it. I hope to one day be able to drop the engine and trans. to fix a syncro or dog teeth. Have you met Jerry (Jmatta)? I bought a jack from him yesterday. He has an awesome 73 RS track car.

Amir-

Spring is coming, so hopefully you can stop pounding your hose and get out and enjoy that thing!

Beware the evil influences around here. They'll drain your wallet.

Welcome to the board. Nice to see another long-hood renegade with a Carrera tail!
Hope you've got a good set of metric tools. Once the sickness takes hold, you'll need 'em.
