Cis Lines No Longer Available?

HELLO ALL,

I RECENTLY BOUGHT A 1979 SC THAT HAD BEEN STORED IN A BARN FOR AROUND TEN YEARS IN ARIZONA. NOW I SEE WHAT PEOLPE MEAN WHEN THEY MENTION A RUST FREE CAR. IT IS ALSO FAIRLY OBVIOUS WHAT TEN YEARS IN THE ARIZONA SUN AND THE OCCASIONAL THUG CAN DO TO A 911'S PAINTJOB AND INTERIOR AS WELL. I ALLREADY HAVE MY RUNNING 3.2 CONVERSION, BUT I "IMPULSE" BOUGHT HER BECAUSE OF THE CHALLENGE SHE OFFERED TO GET HER BACK UP AND RUNNING AGAIN. WHAT AN ADDICTION!!!!
I YANKED THE ENGINE THE DAY IT ARRIVED AND HAVE PRETTY MUCH GONE THROUGH AND INSPECTED HOSES FUEL LINES ETC AND I FOUND THAT BESIDES THE DEAD ANIMALS UNDER THE SHROUD, THE TWO HOSES RUNNING(WHOOPS SORRY CAPS LOCK WAS ON) from the wur to the fuel distributor had actually dry rotted completely.
I allready tried ordering them through pelican and found that they where not available. Has anyone had custom lines built and if so where would you reccomend having it done. Even better would be if someone from the Cleveland/Akron area would chime in if they knew of a place I could go. Can any large machine shop make replacement lines that would work? I have seen steel braided ones out there so I know it can be done. I need to get all of this done before I can even think of starting the "revival process for stored cars as posted numerous times on this awesome website".

I am at a stand still. Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. I highly doubt anyone wants to split up a cis system, but if anyone has these hoses available send me a price. I have a balance in my paypal account and could send payment instantly. I guess if the price was right I would purchase an entire 3.0 cis system compatible to my 79. It never hurts to have spare parts.

good day to all

Search "McMaster Carr". There are a lot of entries on replacing CIS fuel lines.

JIM,
THANKS SO MUCH !!! THIS LOOKS LIKE EXACTLY WHAT I NEED. IF YOU DON'T MIND I HAVE ONE MORE SET OF QUESTIONS. WOULD YOU OR ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER KNOW WHAT THE EXACT SPECS ARE FOR THE TWO LINES COMMING OUT OF THE WUR IE DIAMETER ETC... ALSO WHAT WOULD BE THE METHOD OF ATTACHING THE NEW LINE TO THE OLD ENDS? DO I NEED TO HAVE THESE CRIMPED AT A MACHINE SHOP? HOPEFULLY I DO NOT SOUND IGNORANT ASKING THIS. I AM A NEWBIE WHEN IT COMES TO REPRODUCING HIGH PRESSURE FUEL LINES. I KNOW THE ONE LINE GOES FROM THE WUR TO THE FD AND CONNECTS IN THE SAME MANNOR AS THE INJECTOR LINES. IT LOOKS AS IF THE OTHER GOES TO THE BACK OF THE FD DOWN LOWER? whoops I did it again caps lock!!!! Sorry

the lines are nylon, so dry rot would be unlikely. are you sure it's not just their rubber covering that's gone south? you can pull that off.

ACTUALLY THE LINES HAVE BROKEN. IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE MATERIAL THEY ARE MADE OF BECAME BRITTLE AND BROKE ABOUT ONE EIGHTH OF AN INCH FROM THE POINT WHERE IT MEETS THE BANJO FITTING. SO I GUESS DRY ROT WAS NOT A GOOD CHOICE OF WORDS. THIS CAR WAS SUBJECTED TO SO MUCH ARIZONA HEAT THAT I WAS ABLE TO BREAK OUT THE WINDOW SEALS WITH MY FINGERS AND THE CHUNKS FELT LIKE HARDENED PLASTIC.
THANKS

You can use the later style 80-83 metal lines, the fitting are the same i/d on the F/D and also on the injectors, I'm not sure if pelican sells the upper F/D fittings but I ordered it all from porsche directly, call Mike at Carlsen porsche in Redwood city Calif. 650-701-9200. I converted my 78 3.0 last year to an all metal setup.

Try some of the Pelicans that have fitted Tony's EFI kit. They surely will have what you need.

This may have been due to a defective FD though. No problems reported with the new nylon lines to and from the WUR or CSV, etc. DO NOT CUT OFF the old line; burn it off with a soldering iron or pencil.

Sorry Jim. I'm calling BS! My FD was just fine, thanks. How can you even suggest that seeing as how you've never inspected my car?

Ohio911, I would not try to replace your lines under any circumstances. Buy a set of used plastic or metal lines.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Ohio911,

DO NOT USE McMASTER CARR NYLON OPTION.

I have to agree Rondinone, using the nylon McMaster Carr tubing will cause problems with light throttle performance......it took me over a year to figure out the nylon lines were not up to the task.

I would recommend using the original or metal fuel lines

If you have any questions does hesitate to ask.

Thanks

Stu

I just wanted to also report possible issues with the mcmaster carr lines. I replaced mine last year and due to a move I haven't had much tim to drive or work on the car in a while. I noticed that some time after replacing the lines I started getting some popping and rough running around 3000 rpms and part throttle. At first I figured I just needed to re-tune everything to compensate for the new lines or something...

Then I moved from 5000ft to 1000ft altitude and the problem became much worse and was popping at all RPMS. I re-tuned everything with a meter and eventually tracked the vast majority of my issues to an exhaust leak and by repairing my Dansk muffler that had split at the seam somehow and this fixed everything except the issue around 3000rpm at part throttle.

So I'm now going to try and put some metal lines in see what happens.
I'll let you all know when this is done and what the results were.

I didn't want to believe that there is an issue with the lines not being stiff enough so I did the following test just to see. I pulled an injector and noticed the following. With the fuel pump running and checking flow from the injector by lifting the air meter plate...

Air meter plate closed: no fuel
Slight lift on the air meter plate: smooth steady spray pattern
Air meter plate open from about 1/3 to 2/3 way: The injector vibrates and pulses very rapidly, spray patter wasn't as uniform (IMO this agrees with the theories about the line not being stiff enough)
Air meter plate at full open: smooth steady spray pattern again

Ohio911:
Aside from the lines, the whole system has to be checked/cleaned starting with the tank/pump/fuel lines/ accumulator/filter.
Hopefully the old filter has caught most of the debris so the FD might be o.k. but the injectors need to be cleaned.
Unless some stabilizer, and injection cleaner, was added to the tank and run through the system, the FD could be clogged up.
If the tank wasn't full when stored, it needs TLC.
Up to '80, the SC's had nylon lines, after that came metal.

Why even fiddle with nylon lines when used metal lines from later SC's are readily available? Even fabricating your own from metal lines would be preferable,
