Hi
I have a 1971E Targa with an issue ! It leaks on the rear passenger foot well lots in rain, it has no problems with targa bar or rear window seals. It almost appears to be coming from inside the sill - does anyone have any experience with anything similar ?. Help would be great. |

leaking targa - isn't that somewhat redundant
![]() I once owned an '83 VW GTI that did the same thing - rear passenger footwell would literally fill with a couple inches of water in a hard rain! I never did find the leak, although I suspect it had something to do with the sunroof. I ended up punching a big whole in the lowest spot with a hammer and a screwdriver and cutting a hole in the carpet with a razor knife - probably not the best solution for your P-car!! Welcome to the board and don't be discouraged by any of the disparaging Targa comments about to come your way from the "Coupe Crowd"! (They're just jealous!) BTW - Let's see a pic

"Targa" is English for "Noisy German sports car that leaks". And I'm a proud owner of one.

My Targa doesn't leak. If it's raining I don't drive the car,or I don't put the roof on and cross my fingers.Either way I have no Targa top leaks.

Most Targa owners believe the water comes in thru the steel floor and carpet by oxydihydrotransmogrilocation. Breeang has the fix.

72 targa- no leaks at all, even while being washed (my baby does not see rain and only has her top on when it is cold out). It is fixable but I have no insight as I have never had a problem with mine.

My '87 does the same thing in a hard rain. Rain seeps in at the top rear of the passenger window and runs down the Targa Bar, collecting in the rear passenger footwell. I am convinced that it is because a PO had the targa top rebuilt by someone who did not properly adjust it during reassembly.
I have managed to reduce, but not eliminate, my leak by playing with the adjustment on the side seals. I plan to order a half-cover that keeps moisture out of the interior when parked. I have owned two targas, and while the first one did not leak in a normal rain, nothing would keep the water out in a driving rainstorm. IMO, it's a small price to pay for the benefit of being able to take the top off (unless you live in Seattle).

I was looking for a post by searching for "targa leak", and here I am!!
I moved to Portland OR at the end of last summer from CA. Never had my '80SC targa leaked more then a drop or two down there... Now it seems like I have an aquarium behind the passenger seat. It's almost like Tom Cruise movie, Risky Business, when he opened up his dad's Porsche door and water and fish came pouring out!! I used the last few days to dry the inside out. I put a cover on it and just will not drive it until we get more periods of dry weather. I left my garage in CA, but I should get one soon up here to store the SC in. Anyway, it was interesting to see other people having a similar leak with the source still unknown. I think by the volume of water, it's not a drip-drip but the water collected on the roof getting diverted somehow into the car interior. I'm going to try some observation this weekend. If no rain, I'll use a hose! If there are any other ideas, keep them coming, Thanks!! |

"just will not drive it until we get more periods of dry weather"
funny, i can tell you just moved to portland cuz you didn't say "just will not drive it until summer" my targa is leak free (as long as the garage roof stays intact)

It is fixable. Porsche has a special flyer that details how to adjust targa top and windows. I can't remember which link but I know it is on Pelican. Green cover. PM me with your email and I will send you the pdf file.
