Need opinions/input on hypothetic *big* trade

Here is the deal.
In a big rationalisation move, I just sold my 951 Cup car, that made not much sense in a world of increasing fuel price, law enforcement, and too distant tracks. It was (is) an excellent car, but deep inside I am a 911 guy.
I still own 2 toy cars, the orange lightweight Carrera 3.o that you guys most certainly know, and my wife has a 1983 930, that you guys also know.

As life goes, we have bought this incredible house, that in itself does not force us to sell cars, we can easily manage without this sacrifice.

However (this gets tricky), I have this idea nagging me of a 1989 Speedster, that would have me selling the 2 current cars, and would bring the following benefits:

1 car to work on,
less parking room trouble
half the registration taxes
half the insurance
half the fuel (actually even less, you don’t want to know how much fuel the 930 uses...)
a long wanted garage queen, that I could use sparingly and pamper in its originality.

This project would involve selling/trading my 2 cars for the Speedster, which is not necessarily easy. Another future perk is that I have my eyes on a sweet 911/83 MFI Carrera 1976, one of 123... That is also orange. The room would be available, since by then I’d only have one 911.

So shoot. Should I sell/trade the Carrera and 930 and get a Speedster? Am I nuts to even think about this?

Merry Christmas!

There will always be cool cars for sale. I say buy and sell as much as you wish. If it doesn't work out the way you planned, sell the speedster and buy another 911 and 930. Or early S targa.

If I had the speedster, I'd definately swap it for your cars!

I would prefer the cars that you have now but do what you wish. As long as you dont have an emotional attachment to your particular cars flipping can be alot of fun.

The thing I see with most Speedsters is that the value is based on really low mileage, the lower the better. Most seem to be under 10,000 and are seldom driven. So unless you plan to store it, every time you drive it you are killing the value, something that will not add to your enjoyment. If you could find someone who actually drove his Speedster and had a reasonable amount of miles, that might be a good deal and would make you feel better about driving it.

Let me get this straight: you wanna get rid of two Porsches (one of them your WIFE'S!) so you can get... ONE Porsche? Sounds like you want to be a Porsche owner, not a Porsche driver. Why don't you buy a Bentley, they're pretty to look at.

I think you would be crazy, the 3.0 is a fantastic car from what I have seen of your threads/posts on it, and the 930 is well... a nice 930. Both are cars that I feel are quite desirable. The little details on your C3 are part of what make it so fantastic- all the extra holes in the body welded up, the upgraded brakes and wheels, etc.

These are things you couldn't do to a Speedster without hurting the value. IMO, they are too much of a garage queen and don't really let the owner get into the tinkering aspect of the hobby, or at least not without a loss in value. Not to mention, I don't find them attractive at all. I think you might miss the C3.

The MFI Carrera is the really hard choice. Definately more exclusive than the C3, but the C3 is probably the better driving car. I'd probably get rid of the Turbo, keep the C3, and get the 911/83, but then you'd have two Carreras and not a Turbo... so maybe keep the Turbo so you have one of each? Maybe find a big bore MFI set up and put it in your C3? Then its a little of each! Since you've already owned an RS I guess you have the 911/83 base covered already.

All I can say for sure is that I'm jealous of your dilemna.

I am a firm believer in the " in addition to.." theory ,not the "instead of" way of life. My wife beleives the opposite when it comes to cars, bikes and guns. Unless, of course she is talking about diamonds. Keep the cars...buy the speedster. All will be happy.

I think you need to lay off the eggnog George.
The 1989 Speedsters do nothing for me. Rarity does nothing for me either.

Save your money for that '57 Gullwing we talked about George. Then trade all 3 plus a few $100K. Problem solved!

Thanks to all for the insight. Pretty clear majority... I may add a few elements:

I would drive the p*ss out of the Speedster. I do drive both the Turbo and the Carrera with no worries about the weather. I draw the line before salt though. I am not into this to own, but to drive. Up to about 60mph the drive of an open 911 is tolerable without too much noise/buffeting, and my drives are in the Alps, where 60Mph is quite an achievement and most time is spent at 40-50.

I would (gasp!) modify the Speedster a bit. I have a few aluminum lids, RS 964 buckets, large fuel tank, and a few other goodies that I can fit without drilling into the car, and I would use only Porsche genuine parts. The type of mods that you don't see if you don't look for them, plus they are reversible, though I don't feel these mods would lessen the value of the car.

Here in Europe (I should say over there, but I return home soon enough), a Speedster costs more than the Turbo and my Carrera combined. My only chance is to find a USA car and bring it home.

The theory "Addition" is very nice but no go. Money is short, so trades yes, buys no.

I did indeed have an RS, but I did not drive it at all. a 911/83 is more of a fantasy, although the specific car I have in mind is not for sale ever, except to me and whenever I would want it.
As to the wife, well, she likes driving and likes the idea of spending less (on one car instead of two).

There is something about bombing up a pass with the wind rushing at my ears that I can not define. Every time I drive a convertible I get that stupid grin on my face. It is another definition of Porsche fun that I want to try. Call me an old fart but right now I can not see the appeal of a rock hard noisy car suited for the track only. Must be getting old...

Obligatory pics:

What part of Switzerland are you in? I lived in Zurich and I didn't see too many days when a speedster would be a good car to have. But it seems that selling the 930 and getting the speedster would be a good compromise. Speedsters are damn cool!

One good day in an open top 911 & you're hooked.

George

Like most here, I'm not a big Speedster fan. What about a Turbo Cab? It would give you the open top AND that big turbo boost.

Ian
