CV Joint bolt removal

Okay, so I am tryiing to remove a torn CV joint boot, get 5 of teh 6 bolts out (6 mm allen), but the 6th refuses to move and appears to have had the inside stripped out so that the allen wrench will not engage, what now?

Maybe penetrating oil and vise-grips? I feel your pain.

I second that on the vise grips. Works for me.

I ended up having to remove the other end of the joint, then use an air grinder to saw it off

Good luck...

When I did it, this worked every time:

you take a die grinder or body grinder, and grind a slot in the side of the bolt head, parrallel to the bolts length.

Then using a hand held pneumatic air hammer ($25) and a chisel adapter in it, place the chisel head into the slot, slanting it so it will back the bolt out when the bolt begins to move. Make sure you are wearing goggles and let the air hammer rip. Works every time.

Course, you are gonna have to get a new bolt.........

Hammer a 3/8" drive torx bit into the stripped out portion and then use a ratchet and extension on that

This happened to me a few months back. If you use a die grinder or dremel to cut into the washer behind the bolt, then grab the remaining portion of the washer with a pair of pliers and remove it, all the torque that has been applied to the bolt will be released and you will be able to turn the bolt out by hand. Hope this helps.

Thanx for all the help! A bit of penetrating oil, a new set of Vise Grips (on the clearence isle at Home Depot), oh and a Dremel cutting disc or two, and the bolt was out! New boot on, filled with grease. New shocks on, new sway bar bushings--just waiting for the tires to be mounted, should be on the road by tomorrow afternoon!!!!!!
Celebrating with a St. George's Ale!
Life is good.
