When did your porsche fever start?

Age 7 for me!

I know this may a bit nostalgic but oh well. Mom sent this to me today...other than my spelling not too bad!

In 1973 when I was deciding on my first car (I was way spoiled). It was between a new 240Z or a 914 2.0. I would have to get on a waiting list for the 240Z and there were 914's on the lot.

My father happened to have a business associate stop by one evening when I was trying to make a decision. He had also been involved in our radio control car club and seemed to know a lot about cars. My dad said I should ask him.

So when Gunther Fass showed up I did ask him. I will never forget his reply. Firmly and clearly in a soft German accent he said "I'd get za Porsche".

Turns out old Gunther used to race for the factory.

The rest as they say is history.....

Loved cars growing up, never really cared for Porsches. Turned 16, wanted a vintage type sports cars. Found a 356 locally for $3200. Bought the car. Fell in love. Stayed in love. Currently own Porsches #4, #5, #6.

Third grade, 1978, shopping with mom for school clothes at the mall. They had a 935 on diplay in the main concource. It was right before the Sebring 12 Hour. I promised myself I'd own one someday. 23 years later, I'm on my 2nd Porsche. Not a 935, but still a Porsche.

As a pediatrician, the first thing I want to hear from a newborn baby is a good, load cry.

Now I know what it means. All the baby boys cry " I WANT AIR COOLED !!!"

The baby girls cry " I WANT EXPENSIVE JEWELS !!!"

So when does the fever start ? I guess its an inborn trait...

In the early '60s. I was around 10 years old, and my dad used to sports car race. He had 2 speedsters(1 race, 1 street), a Super 90 coupe, and a RSK Spyder(with a friend). All at the same time! Man, I wish he had kept any of those, but the Spyder especially.
If anyone remembers CDR in Colorado, that is where he raced, there and La Junta. I finally got my Porsche about 6 years ago.

When I was about 7 or 8, would have been '72 or '73. Rode in a friend's dad's brown 911. I will never forget the feeling of how that car moved.

Saw a Porsche 911 at a 1978 Autoshow held at the International Amptheatre in Chicago, Illinois, early winter I believe.

Got sidetracked by Toyota's for about 15 years. (inlcuding a 91 MR2 Turbo I still have)

Bought my first 911, a 78SC Euro 2 months ago.

Hooked.

Hmmm. It's been a long process.

1972: Sitting in 911's at the Porsche+Audi dealer while my parents had their (unbelievably reliable) 100LS serviced. I also sat in 914s, but even at that age (7) I felt they were, well, rather silly.

1984: Watching Al Holbert win the Watkins Glen IMSA race every freaking year. We actually told people we were cheering for ABP (Anybody But Porsche). Should have learned then, but noooo...

1980s-1990s: dismissing 911s as glorified VWs. What can I say, I was an arrogant know-it-all then.

1994: co-worker let me drive his no-longer-stock '76 2.7. THAT was the exact moment I knew a) I had been so wrong it made me want to hide in shame, and b) I needed to "get me one of these".

2005: financially secure and ready to persue the dream, but need to find somene who wants a highly modified, ancient Audi Coupe GT street/track car first to open up a garage bay. Had I not pissed my $$ away on building this nice but outdated fwd car...

My father always dreamed about a 911 - never dared to buy one though. He gave me a Schuco signal yellow targa model for christmas when I was 6 and himself 15 years later a nice 924. He passed away in 2003 and a year later I saw this white Targa for sale parked in front of the Standford University. Checked it out, called the owner (long story), got the cash from the bank and bought it the same afternoon. No PPI, one mile testdrive, no real clue what I got myself into. Now, about $10k later I'm still happy about the purchase and keep learning from this forum.
When did my son start?

I was in high school in Princeton, NJ and my roommate’s older brother was crew for a college classmate’s SCCA racer. We became “volunteer crew” at a race in the fall of ’59, Bridgehampton I think. Someone had taken the tow station wagon to town and our job was to get the race car on the single axle trailer – not attached to a tow vehicle. Laurel & Hardy scene. I remember sand filled my penny loafers. We got the car on undamaged to the aluminum body – an almost new Porsche RSK. The college student unknown owner/driver: Roger Penske. That did it.

I ordered a new 911 from the Factory a few weeks after graduating from college.

Best,
Grady

I was stationed near Stuttgart and my future wife and her family lived next door to a Porsche test driver in Hemmingen. You would see a string of 10 or so new Porsches hauling along on their test route and then they'd pull over and smoke cigarettes and they would be writing in little notebooks and talking to each other. I guess every car would get a shakedown run and any problems corrected. My future wife's father was a teacher at the Ferdinand Porsche Schule in Weissach. Well her family gave me the Porsche bug and it has taken 27 years for it to catch up with me. I bought my first Porsche about three months ago.

I was 9 years old when my pops bought a new 1972 911T in San Francisco.. I fell in love with the 934/935 when I saw George Dyers 934 sitting in my local Porsche dealership show room , Nuefeld Porsche Audi in burlingam CA around 1977 or so just before Bruce Canepa bought it.. I was kind of like the kid in the commercial..I bet we can all relate to that commercial!

Shane....that picture is just awesome!

I was only about 5 or 6. My Aunt had a 356 with a big key on the back.

In the very early seventies, I was just out of HS and I was a surf bum. My apartment address was 311 1st Place Hermosa Beach Ca.

The significance of this address is that it was about 200 feet from Vasek Polak Porsche on Pacific Coast Highway. How could one not be influenced by seeing his 917's 908/3's and other race cars on the showroom floor along with the new Porsches of the day. When I saw the just released mid engine 914-6 right alongside a 917 I new that the race heritage went straight across to the consumer cars.

I also vividly remember looking at the window sticker and seeing a price of $5795 and thinking, wow I will never be able to afford a car that costs that much money.

In grade school my dad would drive to work and drop me off to walk the rest of the way to school. Our local dentist had a beautiful green '67S that I would dutifully stop and ogle every morning outside his building. It only took another 25 years!
