Gettin' picky. (Fri. afternoon bodywork pics)

I thought I'd share some technique with you guys. As you can see, the hood on the 911 has some damage. The PO's body man beat it down and filled it. After stripping the paint and grinding off the bondo, this is what it looked like
I then used the body file to highlight the lows

In the close up, the straight lines show what's even
I went under and used the pick to raise the low dents
After some dolly work, I had a little oil can from stretching the metal and there are some low spots over the underbracing that I can't get to from the back.
So I raised them with some heat and shrank the metal with the sopping wet sponge. [img]
There are a couple of low spots over the underbracing that will have to get filled. Not bad for a couple hours. The rest of the car won't be as easy. I'll keep the progress posted.

Wow! Is this the same car you were cut off by the Boxster in? Can be!

Looks like a job well done. Are you restoring the car Milt, or just doing a little repair?

Congrats, your work looks really nice. A couple of years ago I had to fix a roof line with similar damage but was afraid to use heat. I used dollys hammers and files but if I had it to do over, I would use those "weld on" tabs that attach to a dent puller. Harbor Freight has them cheap enough to experiment with. Chuck

I do those when it's more serious. This is fine tuning and the heat to apply those can be counterproductive. However, if you can't get to the backside at all, you have no choice.

A tool I didn't show is a thin "slapper" that I can insert behind the underbracing and work closer to the pinch seam.

There is some serious cutting and patching coming up in the next few days. All the tools will get used and shown at one time or another.

Wish I had the skill for something like that.

I think it takes skill and patience, two things I am dreadfully short on...

Thanks Milt!
That's awesome (and very informative for those of us who are just delving into the world of sheetmetal).

I'm looking forward to more posts.
Keep up the nice work.

Good Stuff! I'm starting the process of stripping down a front fender because of some checking...found some filler in low spots. I want to fix with a min amount of filler so, thanks for the thread!
