tires for '87 carrera
OK, I know that this subject has been beaten to death, but how about one more round?
My 87 cab is in need of tires. It is currently running Yokohama S306 in a 225/50R16 rear, and 205/55R16 in front. I don't do much driving in wet weather, and the car is a daily driver, some highway, some twisties. I'm thinking of buying Yoko AVID V4S or the Avon M500's. Ideally, I'd like a good gripper with minimal road noise. Thoughts and comments are welcome. Thanks!

I'm happy with my Michelin Pilot Sports of similar size.

Somene recently posted the Car and Driver tire test results from last year. Here's the site I think.

I am running Bridgestone S-03 tires on mine. They are quite nice.

Wider is Better

I just put a set of yokohama AVS ES100's on my '87. They are quiet and seem to handle quite well. I have not really pushed them yet, but so far I like them.

Avons are the way to go. They handle, are quiet, corner in the rain like nothing else out there.
Don't let the price fool you either. Joe Last edited by stlrj; 02-01-2006 at 12:01 PM.. |

I wouldn't recommend them for track use, but for street tires, the price is right. They're quiet and handle well. Even steering response/turn-in is decent for something with softer sidewalls than what I'm used to. $400 for a set is great, too... Mike

I think the Yokos' are the best for your application. Throw some track days in there and you might consider SO3's.

I have run through two sets of the Yokohama AVS ES100s and am now running the Kumho MXs. About the same price (cheap) but the MXs grip better for sure. I have run them in the rain too, and they did well. I don't have enough miles on them to compare wear rates, but so far, they are doing well. Purchased in November days before my DE at Sears.
Hope that offers another perspective from the bargain basement ![]() -Chris

Love my Yoko AVS Sports 215 /45 /17 front and 265 / 40 /17 rear on 7s and 9s. Car is severely lowered. Had to get 1/4 inch extra clearance by oil line in rear and a very very slight roll on the front, maybe 1/8 inch at the top on the right side. Mounted and balanced here in the UAE for $465.00 (all four.) Steering is easy (for me) and the rear sticks well. Surprisingly, the first set of AVS Sports I had were 255s, but the slightly wider 265s stick MUCH better!

Thanks! Looks like either the Yokos win. Probably get them at tire rack, unless I can get a similar deal locally.

Spiro did yo read the C&D article. While Yokos are a great tire and they may cost $465 for 4 in the UAE but here in the USA their Advan cost about $175 each. For that money it seemed like there were some better dry weather tires. Good idea on Tire Rack. I've used Discount stores locally with some success. My only issue with buying high performance tires by mail is the possibility of getting a bad tire and not being able to get it taken care of immediately and for free by getting it switched out with another tire until I'm happy with the ride.

I just purchased (recently) from tire rack, some BF Goodrich KDW II's. And I really like these tires so far. I used to have SO2's but these seem to grip much better. I am also not experiencing the loud road noise that I have read so much about w/these tires.
I've only been able to put a small amount of miles on them since getting them but so far I love em.

Great thought regarding the pitfalls of buying by mail - I had not considered that. I'll also take a look at the C&D article tonight when I get home, and see what they recommend. I'd prefer an all season rather than a summer tire, as car is a daily driver and we still see a bit of rough weather here, but nowhere near as rough as it was in Maine ....

FWIW, I've bought *alot* of tires from Tire Rack and haven't ever had any problems.

Replaced the tires on my '89 Coupe today - The SO-2's were pretty "tired" (get it?), plus I picked up a nail in the L. Rear, and had to use the 'Spare in a Can" to get it to the tire store. Anyway, the Goodyear guy quoted me $938 for a set of F1's - I said that's pretty interesting, when Tire Rack has the same set up, w/ shipping and install at $715....In a nanosecond, the Goodyear guy reduced his price to $778, and threw in a $60 rebate coupon! Thank you, Tire Rack...

I'm in with a bump for Tire Rack. I've heard that the Porsche Dealership in Vancouver uses Tire Rack for ordering tires... inspires a certain level of confidence.
