Interim Project Update: Aluminum Floorboards

In the floor of a 993 is a reinforcing channel, and on the pax side there is the positive battery cable and a thick harness cable. Normally, there is a very heavy foam pad that protects the stuff and levels the area for the carpeting.

Since I've removed all of that, I need to make the floor flat. If you look at the cup car pictures, there is some sort of factory piece that makes the area under the pedals level. So I set out to replicate this.

Here are photos of the floor after removal of the heavy stuff:

I made a template from cardboard:

Got some scrap 0.080 aluminum:

Used rubber stoppers and a fabricated angle bracket to support the panel:

(the blue tape is holding a rubber piece while the glue dries)

Results:

The floorboard is mounted with two fasteners - one is the existing stud that holds the carpet in place (in the rear), further forward, one of the SS screws you see screws into a clip fastener I mounted. I roughed up the surface to make it more dull (less reflection) and less slippy. There is some no-slip stuff under the accelerator pedal. Once I attach the seat and see where my feet hit the floor when I climb in, I'll put a few more strips in place.

Rennline has a set of similar track mats available, but they seemed to need to have the padding underneath. Anyway, for $20 in scrap aluminum and $10 in fasteners, this was a fun project. Oh, they weigh about 2# each, the padding was at least 5 if not 10# a side.

Off to the fabricator to get a half-cage spec'd....

Hey, while you got your tools out, why don't you make a second set?

I know a guy with a C2 that needs some of those!

Looks awesome Don!

I saved the templates!

It's pretty much a bespoke process depending on what is under there. But I'm sure we can work something out!

Thanks!

I saw a similiar thing on ww2 hurricanes just behind the pilots head.
Are you expecting ground fire when overtaking?

Looks good Don, but I think you need to drill a few more holes in the bracket it looks way too heavy

I'm curious why you're only going with a half cage. If you've stripped your car this far why not do the full cage all at once?
