new stereo
hello all,
i'm replacing the original stereo system from my 78 930. I don't really need anything heavy duty, ie no subs or anything like that, and i don't want to cut up the panels for larger speakers or head unit. 1. Speakers: Does anyone have recommendations for speakers that will fit right in? 2. Head Unit: Any recommendations for head unit, i listen to the radio a lot, and burned cd's. 3. AMP: I'm looking for an amp that will boost at low end, i'm interested in clarity and boost at lower volume levels rather than higher volume levels-hope that makes sense. Where's the best location for the Amp? thanks in advance. |

In my opinion the only things that look good in a 911 are becker radios. Its hard to find one that plays MP3s though. They are about the best quality radios out there too.

You can't go wrong with Alpine or Eclipse as an head unit. I am assuming that you do not want a cassette included....
I would refrain from Blaupunct as the quality deminishes over the years (motors and electroncs fail) Not what they used to be. Speakers: there are several choices and it's dependent upon on your budget. Get the best you want to afford. Go to a reputable stereo shop and get advice on what will satisfy your needs and ear. If you drive a coupe, Targa or Cab, make sure you allow for those differences. Good luck

I just fitted a Porsche Becker CDR-210 in my 87 911, the look is great, no flashing light Las Vegas display, I still need to up grade the speakers, but the stereo sounds pretty good, I'm no audiophile though, and it looks like it belongs there. I managed to find mine on ebay. You might want to do a search for Becker Porsche on ebay.

AvonGil,
the link didn't work, seem like it's truncated. What key words did you use?

You can play MP3s thorugh old school Beckers, like the Europa II. They all had input jacks in that back that allow you to buy a mini-DIN adapter. I think the Europas were still finding their ways into Ferraris, Mercedes and Bimmers in '78.

Yellowbird, did you get the display fix I've heard about on the 220, so that it can be read in the 911. Or is this just a myth? and the display can be read in the 911!
Matt

The display problem for the CDR 220 is no myth in the 993. I just traded my 210 for a 220 and you absolutely could not read the display in the daytime(at least with mine you couldn't). Good news is that Becker will trade you out for a display that works well for $50. See my step by step here:
CDR 220 install into 993 |

stock speaker size will not deliver the punch of 6.5.
two 6.5 and 75w x2 amp will deliver nice bass and good volume without distorting.

Please 'splain for those of us that are stereo-challenged, like me! ![]() What is a "mini DIN adapter"? Are you saying this is something I can buy to plug into the back which will let me do...well, what? I want to plug my iPod into the Becker without having to use one of those FM broadcast things. Does this mini DIN adapter make that possible? Easier? Sorry for the lame questions.

Mark, have you done the display swap yet, or is that something you'll do later on. I'd be interested to know how it turns out.

Guys, what are the factory speaker sizes for my car? Would i find this info in the owners manual. I have two mids up front and two spks on the back shelf that look smaller than 6X9. Any recommendations for online audio sites? I have a friend that can do a professional install.
best, paul.

Many thanks to Kenik. I just ordered the cable connector that is going to let me (fingers crossed!) simply plug my iPod into my old 1976 vintage Becker Europa II radio and with new 3 way modern speakers? Aaaaaaay we go! Very, very cool that this is possible.
Follow his provided link to the Early 911S Registry board and you'll know everything you need to do it too!
