CDR 220 install into 993
The stock Becker CDR 210 in Ginger was functional, but I hated the rocker switches. I found a clean CDR 220 out of a 996/Boxster and proceded.
The 210 without faceplate: ![]() I made a couple of removal keys. I won't advocate this cuz you could damage the unit. When the tabs disengage, push the unit from the back: ![]() ![]() Disconnect the 3 harness plugs and antenna. I saw a real opportunity to scar the kneepad/dash so I used masking tape on the area around the radio for protection: ![]() For the 220 to fit, you must remove the cage that the 210 sat in. There are 8 tabs (there are 2 different types of tabs) that hold the cage in. Bend them out of the way: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

There is a green wire connected to the cage that I read is for alarm and not required for the 220. I just disconnected it:
![]() Gathered the connections to plug into the 220: ![]() ![]() Sliding the 220 in is a real challenge. It's very difficult to get the wires out of the way and get the back of the unit to seat correctly in the guides. It took 3 attempts for me: ![]() Success! Waiting for the faceplate update from Becker and it's complete: ![]() |

Excellent info. Do you happen to know if the CDR 210 or 220 can replace the CR-1? E.g. the wiring is the same?

Kang,
Not sure about the CR 1. I think that was an Alpine unit? May be different plugs. If no one answers here, I bet Rennlist has it in the archives. |

Thanks Mark. I can't remember off the top of my head if it is an Alpine or a Becker.

Alarm not working after cdr 220 install.
Re: I read is for alarm and not required for the 220. I just disconnected it..
I just upgraded to the CDR 220 and did not see a place to connect the alarm wire. Now when I lock the doors, the horn does not chirp. I also got into the car, armed the car and opened the doors but the alarm did not go off any suggestions for the relation to the horn/alarm and the CDR 220 install? BTW, this radio sounds much better than the 210! |

If you only did not connect that green wire and didn't accidentally dislodge something else while you were in there, perhaps just ground that green wire. The original radio cage would have been grounded and if you didn't reconnect that wire, it won't be grounded any longer.
This is just a guess, but it may help.

Which way do the plugs go?
I removed and reinstalled my CR 210 from my 993. Now the radio doesn't see the CD changer. The plug for the CD pulled out when I removed the radio and I didn't see which way it goes in. Does the locking tab go toward the inside or the outside of the radio?

In the absence of the sleeve, what holds the 220 in place?
