When converting to a G50...

So, my 915 is toast, clutch...dead, axles(seen better days). I have made up my mind to convert the car to a G50 transmission. I know that there is not a whole lot of info out there when doing this procedure. I pretty much know how I am going to do this; shortening the bellhousing and mainshaft.

Right now at this stage, I am gathering up all the info and a list of all the parts I am going to need. I only have two questions for anyone that can help me out on this.

1. When the bellhousing and mainshaft are shortened, some people have reported that they use an early 930 flywheel and clutch setup. There is a problem with this method, as in the motronic sensors have to have some modified pickup points because of the flywheel being different than the 915 flywheel. So why cant I just use the 915 flywheel/clutch setup that came with the car? Are there clearance problems? It would sure cut the cost down quite a bit, and leave me with better and cheaper clutch options.

2. The axles. Ok, the 100mm CV axles that I have are obviously different than the 108mm axles that I would need to use. The later axles have the stub shaft from the wheel hub attached to the CV. Mine are not like this. How would I go about to do this. Are there any modifications that have to made to my wheel hub?

Hi

I did a G50 conversion on my SC. I don't know if you can use a 915 clutch set up. I would think the TOB would be the only issue. I used the early 930 clutch. Call KEP and ask Brett.

If you use late (G50) Carrera axles they are plug and play. That is what I did and they fit fine.

You do know that even with the shortened bellhousing you will have to move the motor back .75". Just so you know.

Good luck

Thanks dean for replying. Well thats a sigh of relief for the axles, Ill give KEP a call. Just curious, how much did the 930 fw and clutch setup run you?

I had the flywheel. The PP costs maybe $500, the disk is about $100 and the TOB is just under $100. If I remember correctly.

Beau,

I would doubt that you could use the 915 flywheel/clutch assembly, as the diameter is smaller at 225mm than the 930 and/or G50 components, which are 240mm diameter.

If you get to the point that you are ready to install the transaxle, let me know and I can lend a hand.

It's probably not cheap converting a 915 to a G50, but once you've driven with one you'll never go back.
