Console removal
Hi Guys
I'm new to this so excuse me if my question has been posted before. I'm replacing the bushes in my 1986 911 shifter, and can't work out how to remove the console. I have all the screws out that hold it to the floor, but how do you disconnect the wiring harness so it can be removed. Also once the harness is removed will it clear the handbrake when I try to lift it out? |

A year and model l will help us help you.
The 911 console has one screw at the back of the console, knid of under the carpet and the handbrake. The console will come around the handbrake. Just turn it clockwise BEFORE lifting it.

Hi, thanks, it is a 1986 911 carerra, I have the screws out that hold the console down, but how do I disconnect the wiring to the air con controls, central locking, etc. Do the switches come out of the console somehow, or is there a plug on the loom somewhere.
Thanks, Larry

I don't have any switches in my console. I just checked my repair books but they don't show anything. I would assume that they would clip together like any other electrical connection on the car. Can you get the console turned over enough to see the back side of the switches?
I'm sure someone else with chime in to help as well. Sorry about that.

Thanks Wayne, I can't see behind, and there is no sign of a plug, I'll wait and see who replies
cheers Larry

Hi Larry,
I took my console out on my '84 to do the gear shift bushes recently and as far as I remember once I had undone the screws and maneuvered it forward a little I found just a single electrical clip behind the console which disconnected all the wiring to the switches in the console. It was just one of those plastic electrical clips with multiple wires into it - I didn't have disconnect any individual switches or anything.

Very careful - there's an A/C capillary tube back there (at least there was in my 87) connected to the temp level control. Later tonight I'll look in the PET and see if I can remember how I took it out - or others will chime in.

I just changed mine on my 84 911 and did not disconnect the wires. Why I do not remember, I think at first I did not see the connector either. In any event I managed to lift the console over the shifter to access the bushings. Search for a recent thread that I did or about bushings. Some of the problems I hit as a newbie like you, you may want to read....Enjoy, looking back it is an easy project (but required some PP buddy help)

There was an article I recall in Excellence Mag sometime in 2005 which describes "Rubic's Cube" instrument cluster, back issues here: http://www.excellence-mag.com/back_issues.html PM me if you need help. |

I just replaced mine with a new and improved cool one and basically you have to remove the wiring from the switches. make sure you look where they go cuz there are alot of wires attached to each switch. Also, the A/C temp switch has a permanently attached thermostat wire. you have to pull it out of the coil and be very careful not to break the connection at the switch.

When I did my shifter bushings, I pulled the knobs off the fan and A/C controls and underneath there were hex nuts holding the switches to the console. I undid the nuts and the switches just pushed through and stayed in place. I don't think I had to remove any wiring at all. Just remember which side the two switches go on - even that seems like it was fixed by the wiring harness.

Thanks for the replys, I did get it out without removing the harness, never did find a plug though, just pulled the handbrake on hard to get the handle out of the way, and removed the gear stick from the shifter. Thanks guys for your help
