911R offset on Mid Year cars

Hi all,

It is time to replace my tires on my mid year (1976) 911S. My current setup is 205-55-16 tires on 16 x 6 inch fuchs wheels at all four corners. I am thinking of having my rear wheels modified to the 49mm offset (a la 911R) so as to fit some 225-50-16 tires in back.
Has any one done this on their mid year cars(with stock flares) and if you have, would you mind sharing some photos, especially shots of the back end.

TIA,

Michel

Thanks Bill,

That is good info. So, it looks like I will need some 17mm spacers, and longer studs to fit these wheels to my car. Do you have first hand experience with this setup? Sure would like to see some pics of this "look".

I sure would love to see some pics of a narrow body car with these wheels wearing 225s - as seen from the back of the car.

On a somewhat related note: I have been talking to Mike at Lyndsey (sp) Racing about making a pair of 16x7 3 piece "Fuchs" for the back of my narrow car so i can run 225/50's. I currently run 16x7 with 205/55-16 on all four. There is plenty of room on the inside for more tire, we just need the right offset.

Paul,
the folks that gave me feed back indicated that they used a 10 -22mm spacer on the R wheels which have +49mm o/s. That means that the net o/s they are using is +39 to +27. It seems to be that the +27 is closer to what you want for a 7. There are quite a few using +23.3s

the limit is ~152mm of backspace

If I was going with the three piece wheel, then a custom offset could be calculated and custom wheel could be built for my car and choice of tire.
However, I want to keep the "look' of the side of the wheel the same as the front ones and with no tire hanging past the wheel well.
I have read somewhere that someone can modify my 16 x 6 by cuting them on a lathe, adding some material or using another wheel and welding them back together. The result is a wider wheel that looks the same as a 16 x 6 from the side, but, is 7+ inches wide to accomodate a 225 width tire.

Bill,
Thanks for the good advice, i wasnt aware that the R wheel needed a spacer. If i could effectively move the wheel inboard up to an inch, i could easily fit a 225 or one of the 205's out there that come out much wider. I think the Toyo Proxis tires are actually much wider than the sidewall says.

Michael,
I have considered that too. Harvey Weidman is doing lots of good stuff like that with Fuchs but he is always backed up due to demand. He can add a inch to the back of a 6 and he said he has experimented with adding to the inside and removing a bit from the outside.

I would like to find someone that is willing to machine some Fuch centers and then i could buy some BBS wheel halves and experiment a little. I might spend a little more, but it would be cool to have them just right and really fill out the fenders.

Paul,

You are essentialy trying to achieve the same goal as me. Sure would like to see some photos of a car with this setup before I jump in and spend the $$$ on this project. Thanks for your input.

just for a data point i run 215/60/15's on my mid-year, but i don't track the car..if i did, the fenders would need a slight rolling. i have 15x6 fuchs.

Here is a photo of 225/50-15 SO3 on a real 7R rim with 17mm of spacer and longer studs. Car is a narrow body '72 911S. Negative camber is 1.5, fender lip is rolled, spring plate bolt shaved, 27mm reat TB, 18mm rear factory Sway Bar, regular Koni shocks, rear ride height is 23.5" ground to fender lip.

Randy,

Wow...that photo is great!! All of your 72 cars look fantastic too. Would it be too much to ask for a couple more pics of your blue car taken of the rear end showing both tires and full width of the car.

Thanks so much,

Michel
