How do I check the oil in a 1972 911T?

Engine at idle after at least a 30 second run....is usually sufficient...do not over fill...typically between the lines is fine

I removed the cap and saw all the oil flowing about with the car running. Kind of strange way to have to grab the dip stick. Thanks
