Isn’t this cars owner a poster here on Pelican?

Isn’t this cars owner a poster here on Pelican?

Forgive me if I am wrong but wasn’t this 930 for sale at a much higher (read that as closer to fair market value) then this price? Am I nuts or is this a scam or stolen eBay account. I believe this car was posted on the Porsches for sale section a few months ago at a price that was in line with the markets. Now it’s offered at what appears to be a VERY cheap price.

eBay item number 4613792483 incase the link below does not work.

Here is a link..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1982-930-Turbo-PORSCHE_W0QQitemZ4613792483QQcategoryZ6433QQrdZ1QQ cmdZViewItem

If I am correct I hope he clears this up, I’d hate to see a fellow Pelican get there ID stolen or a fellow board member get scammed by whom ever stole that eBay id.

I looked through the pelican cars for sale section, and yes, you're right. The seller is a member. The car had been for sale for some time and his last post was dated 01/27/06. In that post, he had dropped price to 20K and listed it on Ebay.

Same ebay user name on this current listing. This looks legit (and this is coming from someone who did get scammed on ebay so I'm very suspicous). Wish I had $17,500 in my pocket because this car would go home with me. Definately a pelican member.

The EBay ad says "The VIN # is WP0ZZZ93ZBS000134."

Since 1981, the vehicle identification numbering system has been standardized and uses 17 digits (123-456-78-9-10-11-12-13-14 15 16 17). The first three digits are the world manufacturing code and Porsche's code is WPO. The next three digits (456) are the VDS code for the U.S.A. and Canada. These three digits on the rest of the World cars are ZZZ. Thus this car is a "Grey Market" 911. This might account for the perceived low price.

uh-oh, RoW car with US speedo! What was the milage on the euro speedo before it got changed out????? Probably a good deal for the price, I would just be very skeptical about the milage.

Thanks for doing the leg work. I thought I had seen this one before and I didnt want either the seller to have his ID ripped off or someone get scammed buying it. To the seller: that looks like a heck of a deal, good luck with your sale.

I thought about buying this same car when it came up long ago. I thought at the time the price was a bit low, 22,000, for the condition , and it stayed unsold for so long that I thought there must be some problems with it. A nice looking turbo for 17,500?. Well, I hope the sale goes good.

All 82 930s are ROW cars. Still, if I thought I could get away with it, I'd buy this one in a heartbeat.

Wow, 17.5. That seems like a very good deal for that car...

Wonder if he would take the 77 on trade....

Some of the earlier auction(s) mentioned rust, as does this one. In the window frame / cowl area. That concerned me. It was not mentioned in the old PP for sale thread, IIRC. The engine was rebuilt by GD racing, a very good shop. I think he has documentation, yes, it's even posted in the auction. That made the car interesting for me. To the point where I was toying with the idea of selling the SC and getting this instead. Swap track equipment over etc. Euro is not a problem, except that there is SALT on German roads and salt will make cars rust. The second I read the R word in the auction, my interest went to zero. One of the great advantages of later 911s in CA is that you will never have to deal with rust. Why give that up?

bbaer-maybe you can get someone from the list here to take a look at the car for you. Sounds like a good deal if the rust is not bad.

I have never seen any "good" rust. An 82 should have zero rust. If you need to do rust and paint repair on this 17.5k car, it will soon be a 25k car.

If I had to guess I'd say that over 1/2 of the SCs and Carreras on the E. Coast have rust. I've spoken to some pretty reputable body people who've told me the same. And I'm not even talking about the kind from road salt. Peel up the seal around the windshield and make note of what color the metal is.

Wine Red on mine! The windshield channel is a candidate, because people put silcone sealer as a crutch when the windshield seal starts leaking. Then they need a new windshield or a seal after all and birng it to the glass place. They glass place folks generously scrape all the old silicone goo out, scratching the window frame all the way to the bare metal. If you do that the car will rust in any climate.

Maybe this is all that's happened to this particular car. However, my bet is salt on Euro roads, along with a poor paint job that dug beyond the galvanizing.

George
